Rusty's up over 150 retrieves for the season and it's really showing up in his performance. Today's included a 200+ yard blind on a LST gadwall sailer that folded in an adjacent pasture. We didn't go after that bird until 7:30 or so after things slowed down a bit as we had several birds down in the water in the first 20 minutes.

Took him out out of the blind and gave Rusty a line to where I had marked the sailer down. Sent him too far to the south on purpose so that I could stop him when he got parallel to the fall area and recast him into a 10-12 mph NW wind in his face. Didn't need to ... he caught the scent cone on his own and worked the pasture 25 yards or so over to where the bird had fallen. Good boy Rusty ... you make your Daddy very proud of you.

We ended up with a pair of mallards, a Gadwall, a GWT and what appear to be Bluebills ... not completely sure though.

Great hunt. I always enjoy reading your stories and looking at your pictures. The duck on the left side of the picture is a ringneck or or commonly refered to as a "blackjack" not a bluebill.

I promised myself that I would stop shooting Ringers. So Rusty will no longer be retrieving the occasional Aythya collaris. Rather, he will only fetch up Oxyura Almostamis, if things are really slow.

Got me on this thread. Should have known.

Thought your grandson showed up for the holidays and had some pics.

Don't get me wrong, still enjoy hearing about y'alls hunts. Rusty is a great duck dog.

Those ringers are damned hard to clean too.

Cool story on the blind.

I enjoy the posts too cappy. I sure wish i had a place like you to hunt.
