I will be heading to the land cut for a few days to hunt in a few days. I am not new to duck hunting but new to duck hunting the coast.

I was planning on taking around six dozen decoys of widgeon, teal, gadwall, and pintail. Is it the more the better down there and should I take all the decoys I have including mallards?

Do I need to just scout the day before and then try to get as close to where I have located large groups next to cover like I normally would?

Do most people just set-up in the marsh grass in the area and try to stay hidden in the native grass?

What calls should I expect to be using? Pintail whistle?

What ducks can I expect to see beside redheads and pintails?

Any help and tips are appreciated and not looking for anybodys spot by any means just general tips for the area. I plan on getting a full day of scouting in before we hunt.

Thanks

leave your mallard drakes at home

you'll see a lot of bluebills

you should probably take all the decoys you have

Good luck, its very slow around that area right now. Im being honest and not trying to turn you away. It really sucks and has been that way for the past 3 weeks.

Were going fishing anyway for a bachelor party so we will have fun regardless but we were going to try our hand at duck hunting while were there.

We have actually seen a few Mallards on the coast this year.

All duck types!

I don't mean to go against what another has posted about types of decoys. It does not matter if you have mallards on the coast. They are seeing blocks and if their coming, their coming no matter the decoy. Put them out because you need as many as you can get out.

Should see more redheads and pintails then anything.... and we usually scout the day before morning and evening so if ur morning hunt doesnt go as planned u have a evening hunt already set up.... and we just use layouts or make blinds with the natural grasses or brush thats already there...... good luck and post pics

When finding the x, what is the rules on setting up in the marsh?

Is it owned by someone or is it open to the public?

I ask, because where I was hunting the marsh was leased land.

I was down there last week. Tons of redheads. We put out 2 dozen redheads, a dozen ringers, and a dozen pintails. Also put out widgeon and teal...but it was probably unnecessary. I learned that it isn't the same as puddle duck hunting. Don't put your blocks out too far, the divers will skirt the edge of the decoys and even try to land into them, sp place them close enough to shoot over.

now someplaces are private land but they need to be marked.... my understanding that if the land isnt marked its ok for the public to hunt it..... on the other hand on the public side is first come first serve.... if you find other blinds its legal to hunt them... but inm y opinion there needs to be a law against that.... i have a couple of blinds in the matagorda bay system and near seadrift it bothers me to find someone in my blind but thats just something you have to deal with

That is actually a pretty good point. Especially since if you bay hunt you'll see more redheads and bluebills than anything, and most of those are either gonna buzz by in range or they will come in so fast and committed they won't have time to wonder if they accidentally wandered into a gay bar.
