I have been considering purchasing this gun in .308
Does anyone have any reviews they care to offer? Also, Where would you consider the best place to buy?

I have a SPS Varmint in 22-250. It shoots lights out, less than .5 MOA. I handload in mine, but my buddy owns a .308, and with factory 150gr Winchesters, his was shooting about 1 1/8" groups at 200yds. It could be flukey to get two of them that shoot that well, but I'm planning on getting a .308 for myself. I have a pillar bedded stock on mine, his was straight factory. I think if you buy before the end of the year, you get a $40 mail in rebate from Remington.

There are folks on here that say there gun is a "tack driver", but you seldom see pics. I have pics of groups from 100 and 200 yds if you want to verify my claims of its accuracy.

Thanks for the info. I have looked at the Savage as well. For my price range I think you can't go wrong with either one.

If you are planning on hunting with it much I'd strongly consider the sps tactical. Comes in a better stock, accuracy while good on both is typically better on the tactical. Read the reviews and reports there isn't a big advantage to the varmint and prices will be similar.

If it is a hunting rifle the 26 inch barrel is a little unhandy in thick brush, blind or truck.

I purchased one a few years back and it was a very good gun out of the box. The stock lacks a little to be desired and the scope is nothing to write home about, so over time I added a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock along with better optics. My gun shoots .5 MOA with handloads if I'm doing my job. The gun seems top prefer 168 grain bullets, so I'm shooting Hornady Amax on top of 43 grains of Varget with CCI BR Primers.

I had a tactical bolt knob installed and adjusted the trigger pull. I am also going to add an aftermaket trigger and detachable magazine next year. I considered a new barrel and having the action trued, but I'm not going to invest the money with the gun shooting this well.

I'd highly recommend this gun for someone looking for a very accurate heavy barrel rifle on a budget.

Go to the Sniper Central web site and read their review.

Joe

+1

My .308 is 24" and it can be unhandy in the same situtions.

Id go 700 sps tactical over the varmint any day, especially for hunting. That varmint is not only heavy, but its a pain in the [censored] with the barrel being so long. I use to hunt with a 700 tactical in 308 and liked it alot. The Savage 10FP is also nice and will get the job done as well. Havent owned one but I have shot abuddy of mines and was shooting 3/4" groups @ 200ys with some hand loaded ammo.

I've seen and heard some really good things about the new heavy barreled Marlins! They come in 308 and 22-250. The guys at the local range have shot clover leafs in less than one box of factory ammo. He has the target to prove it... It's pretty inexpensive as well. Go check one out!

I have a new SPS which is shooting 3/4" at 200. I put an H&S Precision stock on, and floated it. This was shooting FGMM. Started working up a load for it last night. Can't load long enough to find the lands for some reason.

Well I have narrowed it down based on suggestions. Remington 700 SPS Tactical or the Savage 10 FP. This is a hard decision maybe I should just flip a coin.

If you buy the Remington, plan on upgrading the stock. Remington makes a great rifle, but they have cheep stocks. If you can find one with a HS precision stock then you can get your best accuracy. JMO
