I live in Lousiana and I just built my first AR to hunt pigs with because I heard it was fun. The problem I have is that I've never seen a wild hogs in my area. What should I do? I hope I didnt invest my money for nothing.

Although this is the Texas hunting forum, I have to ask... What part of Louisiana are you in that you haven't seen pigs?

There's plenty of hogs in La. just don't give up and talk to everyone you know, do a search. I'd do everything before I hired a guide.

I live about an hour east of Shreveport right off of I-20. I might have to find a public place farther west maybe around Shreveport.

Maybe the ghosts of Bonnie and Clyde are keeping the pigs away. You near Gibsland?

Plenty of pigs in the area, just takes time to get them there. Once theyre there and you keep a steady supply of food, theyll stick around. Just make sure you dont leave your scent on anything. Pigs are very smart animals and have a good sense of human presence. Id put a corn feeder up in 1 spot, build a pig pipe and put that in another, and not far from your hog pipe make you a mixture of slop, get a post hole digger and bury it about 6 inches deep in several different holes. Makes them work for their food and keeps them in the area just like the pig pipe does. I also hunt with an AR and ill give you a little tip. Barnes Vortex 55gr. Put it behind the ear and youll never have to track a hog. Youll drop them in their tracks every time. I usually try to avoid shoulder shots as I dont like chasing a wounded hog.

Good advice here.

Thanks man that seems pretty simple and effective. Do you think that it is still necessary to put that out around corn fields or whatever crop I moght be hunting around?

So it turns out that I might be moving to Dallas. I got a job offer/relocation and they want me there in two weeks and they have thrown me a big persuasive number that I dont think that I can pass up. Are there any good public hunting areas near by for pigs?

PM me if you want a few good places to check out. I've got one that pays off for me in the winter, its a paid place but its wild and there's no hog bag limits.

How far out of Dallas do you have to go to be able to hunt?

The Waxahachie area has them as well. Probably a little more than an hour south of Dallas. I'm not sure how dense they are though.

I looked up public hunting areas near dallas and most of them looked like they were for Dove hunting. Does anyone know if there are any for hunting pigs.

tim, think to hunt pigs on public, you are going to have to travel a bit (hour or two) for pig hunting. There is public land around lake tawokini, bout an hours drive from downtown dallas, or when you get to town, make sure to make friends who have land! lol.....

I realize that making friends with people who have land to hunt on is going take time, but i'd rather do that than have to drive an hour out of town to kill some pigs.
