Absolutely. If they get pissed about it, you probably don't want them as a customer anyway. These are usually the ones who are going to bitch and complain no matter what. Write them off your customer list.

Write them off your customer list. i had a guy (repeat customer) come down with a buddy and his adult son to come shoot hogs. the two guys shot hogs the first morning, then kept killing them. for some reason son counldn't get on them, so i put him in a blind where i knew the pigs would come. low and behold, pigs come in, kid wiffs an 80 yard shot(it happens, i missed a doe at the same feeder last week) then the dad trys to crawfish out of his son having to pay because he didn't get a pig!

To me it was an obvious good gesture with absolutely no downside.First, you are being honest ahead of time. Second, you are giving them the option of a refund. A good move for both parties because it can prevent alot of issues before they arise. Don't see that it's even debatable.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Bubbagunn, not only is what you are doing the right thing to do, I hope more people see your post and follow your lead. You are putting a little bit of ethics back into a sport that at times seems to be running on empty on the "E" word. Good job!

i think you will find that you will increase your future business by doing what you did bubba. In a market full of scam artists, word will travel about how you run your operation and people respect that.

You are putting a little bit of ethics back into a sport that at times seems to be running on empty on the "E" word. Good job! Thanks, I for one know how it feels to get the shaft on a day hunt. I went on plenty of them before I got the opportunity to take over the properties I lease now. Nothing worse than spending your hard earned money to sit in a blind for 3 days and see nothing. I like to guarantee that there will be plenty of shot opportunities. If i cant guarantee that then I'd prefer to take a loss!

Definitely a good gesture, and should prove to all reasonable clients you're not just after the money but seriously interested in their success.
If anyone can't appreciate that, the problem lies with them.
How many outfitters wouldn't say a word and tell them they scheduled those dates so they were obligated to go at that time? Like was mentioned before, you gave them the option, didn't cancel on them.

Being open and honest with customers is never a bad thing. I do my best to always paint a realistic picture of the hunting on our place every year. This year because of the drought I had a couple guys ask to roll there bookings to next season.. and I allowed it. Happy customers are the best thing a business can have.. in good times and bad.

Just A note on the hunting At Night/Seeing at night, phrase. Not trying to ruffle anyones feathers, but there should never be a reference to hunting "last night" or seeing "a big buck last night". This phrase has become more commom in the last 5 years due in part to the hunting shows. A lot of folks in the midwest and north east have used this phrase for a long time. But I hear it alot more down south here. It Is still incorrect. We hunt in the afternoon, or saw a big buck just before dark, this makes sense. Not "we saw 2 bucks last night" when you actually saw "2 Bucks yersterday afternoon". Not sure why folks use the term "last night". It sure conjers up a wrong impression to non hunters. JB

What if you saw a big buck early this morning? Since morning "technically" starts at 12:00 am, some may think you're hunting then I'm kidding! Don't get mad at me As to the OP, I think you're doing things the correct way, and it will come back to you in time. If you want respect, show respect...if you want honesty, be honest. Kudos to you sir, you're doing the right thing
I will get off in a little bit You shouldnt have said that

It sounds like you are doing the right stuff. I would appreciate it if I was in the customer's shoes!

Someone is complaining because you gave them a heads up?
If they showed up and did not see anything, they would be on here calling you out.
Some people just are unhappy with life, no matter how things go for them.
I've hunted with Bubbagunn in the past. He's good to go, and this is just more proof of it.

If you are calling them and telling you are canceling their hunt I can understand their anger. If you are calling and giving them the choice to keep their hunt even though the hunting isnt that great, then they should be appreciative. I'm giving the option to hunt or not. I am really just embarrassed this year. We seriously see hundreds of deer on our wheat fields a day... The drought has changed their pattern a lot from prior years. This is a low fence ranch and I do not want hunters saying that I misrepresented the ranch. Hunters that are return hunters seem to appreciate the heads up! You have offered them your a choice and also what you have seen and noticed on your ranch - can't ask for more than that from a guide or outfitter. I have always apprciated the call and insight.

If they're too dumb to understand a drought, you probably don't need them on your property with a gun in their hands anyway...
