OK last Sunday went out to local Lake X (by myself) and of course lots of mud. 2 feet out I hit some quicksand and kept sinking almost to my hips. It really freaked me out being by myself, 4 am..etc. So my question is how do you handle the deep mud? Just toss out dekes & retreive birds using fishing rod/DWDR?
A Prior hunt I couldn't walk since mud kept sticking to my waders while others where walking much easier. Is there something I can do to prevent this? At the end it was easly 30lbs per foot of mud and still had 30 yards till dry land. I was thinking Silcone spray might help. I appreciate the help!!

Camo drysuit and act like a mud skipper and crawl. To be serious stay out of that deep stuff by yourself. Chunk some deks out and use a fishing pole to retrieve both ducks/decoys. Good luck.....
Jager is like liquid xanax. Wake up looking like you fell in a tiger exhibit and crawled through a leech filled swamp to get out.

That kind of mud can be fatal in all seriousness. Few years ago, similiar conditions, a soldier on leave from Iraq went out didn't come home that night. They found him the next night stuck in the mud but, he didn't make it.
Live to hunt, hunt to live.

That thick muds no joke! During teal season I sunk down in some mud and had to ditch the waders to get out.after many failed attempts I eventually had to get a shovel to dig em out. Fishing pole worked fine for me after that

I always carry a stick or paddle when out wadeing around in the dark. I hear you have to swim out of quick sand if you get stuck real bad! And baby oil or armorall would probably work for keeping the mud from sticking to your feet so bad. But just put it on the boots.

find a new spot! my technic of army crawling out one afternoon just about ruined all motivations of going again. now I use a golf ball retriever from walmart (10$) and rigged up a pole with big trebles and bobbers to retrieve birds. it is a very scary moment when you relize your stuck. I lost my great spots due to the mud

That was probably a un-nerving experience. On another forum, someone asked how to escape quick sand. Not sure if quick sand and the type of mud you're talking about are the same. However, given how close they are, it may be one in the same. Anyway, here is a short training video on how to get out of that situation:

I got stuck pretty good a couple times walking in on the coast. I used a full decoy bag and used the buoyancy to pull against and climb out. Thick mud is no joke. Especially solo
Stickin' gills and Stackin' bills
In a world of compromise..... some dont....

My two ventures out this year have found mud up to my knee's a few times. SUCKS and can add some stress and makes for one heck of a long morning walk in and out. Found nice stick cut and cleaned by a local beaver to use on way out to help with freeing myself ..but on the whole NO FUN !!!!
Were all here, cuz were not all there !

I'm gonna have to try the cooking sprays myself. does this actually help? keeps the build up off or easier to free yourself of the notorious suction it creates

i remember one of rob;s story where he pulled a guy out that was up to his neck. Here is an old post about me from the Refuge writen by George Crane. George and I hunted all over Texas and Oklahoma for about 15 years. Yentzen and the Human Head -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most of you are familiar with a poster nicnamed Yentezn. His real name is Rob Robertson and he works for his families' meat prossing business in Marietta, Oklahoma. If you have ever bought Robertson's beaf jerkey at a Loves store you can rest assured that Rob has licked every piece to make sure the seasoning is 'just right'. Now if you know Rob you may have a tendency to doubt this story because, as we all know, he has a strange attitude about telling the truth. I put it to you that this story is so bizarre that even Rob couldn't dream it up. Several years ago Rob had a little airboat. Nothing earth shattering, just a jon boat with a Panther airdrive bolted to it. It made a nice little boat until the two stroke motor vibrated the whole thing to pieces. Since Rob hunts the mud flats at lake Texoma, he spent the summer running around the lake testing the boat. Now if you have never been to Texoma, I should explain that the lake has been silting in since the day it was built (why do you think the Red River is red?). In fact several miles of lake that was thirty feet deep are now either dry land or shallow mud flats (the people who make lake maps haven't caught on to this). That means that you are standing on thirty feet of silt. The bottom comes in several flavors: hard sand, quicksand, moderat mud, and (my personal favorite) somthing the consistency of bottomless butterschotch pudding. One day Rob was cruising down the mud flats and rounded the point into the river channel, when up the river he saw three fisherman pushing a boat through a shallow spot in the channel. As he approached the men Rob saw, out of the corner of his eye, a human head sitting on the mud. Now human heads are nothing to git excited about (after all this is Oklahoma) and Rob was about to pass the head by when, to his supprise, the head came to life and seemed to be screaming at him (you can't really hear anything in an airboat). A human head with some life left in it IS unusual, so Rob swung around and got as close to the head as he could without getting stuck. It seemed the head had been in the boat with the other fishermen when the river had gotten too shallow for the motor to run. Pushing the boat had been to much work for this genius so he had decided to wade to shore and walk on dry land. BIG MISTAKE!!! This is where head met butterscotch pudding. The head had been treading mud for fifteen minutes and was nearly exausted when Rob came along. To make matters worse, the head's buddies were having a great laugh while he is drownding in mud. Now Rob (being the great humanitarian that he is) would have cranked up and driven off but there were witnesses present, so he threw the head a rope. Much to Rob's surprise, the human head was attached to an enormous human body. Rob described the incedent as trying to pull a three hundred pound greased pig into a tippy jon boat with no help from the pig! After that incident Rob swore he would never rescue another human head. In fact, he would just run right over them and keep on going (who says Okies are dumb?). So all you human heads out there beware, cause Rob and his prodrive are coming to get you!!! Merry Christmas Rob

Thanks! I'm going w/ the fishing rod and will try the Pam spray. Over week walking thru knee deep mud for an hour I thought about snow shoes. Thinking more surface the mud will stick to and get heavier than just walking.
