I sell doe and spike hunts every year. Previous years have been awesome with customers seeing 100+ deer a night. This year is no where near to what we are used to seeing. I've been calling and emailing the customers letting them know that this year is not good and giving them the option for a refund and to try and book a hunt somewhere else. Most customers are pissed that I am telling them this... If I were booking a hunt and the ranch called me to tell me that hunting sucked I would appreciate it. What are your thoughts???

My question is why are your customers seeing deer at night? Shooting deer at night is illegal in Texas.

I think you did them a service by informing them and I would tell you to hold my money and put me down for next year or risk not seeing deer and enjoy the get away!

I have had this come up with fishing guides. As a customer I have always appreciated the heads up and opportunity to reschedule.

My question is why are your customers seeing deer at night? Shooting deer at night is illegal in Texas. I dont even know why I'm wasting my time responding to your question. When i said they see a hundred deer a night "I mean a hundred deer per evening hunt".. Guess I need to be more specific for the arm chair hunters that pipe in every chance they get!! As an avid hunter and outfitter, why in the hell would i sell a night hunt to doe and spike hunter? Although, I have plenty of exotics that could legally be shot at any time day or night if I chose to do so. Guess I'm looking for comments from someone who appreciates what I do!

If you are calling them and telling you are canceling their hunt I can understand their anger. If you are calling and giving them the choice to keep their hunt even though the hunting isnt that great, then they should be appreciative.

Yep. Don't wait and tell me as I'm unpacking my gear. Then again if hunting was easy everyone would be doing it. Expect to get skunked.

If they believe you, they should definitely be appreciative.
My only guess is that they've been burned by outfitters or guides that just didn't feel like going that particular day. I've had fishing guides cancel on me before when I know for sure the fish were biting and they just didn't want to do a second outing that day.
It's also pretty tough for some people to reschedule. I have to get vacation on the calendar a month or more in advance a lot of times.

I am really just embarrassed this year. We seriously see hundreds of deer on our wheat fields a day... The drought has changed their pattern a lot from prior years. This is a low fence ranch and I do not want hunters saying that I misrepresented the ranch. Hunters that are return hunters seem to appreciate the heads up!

I understand as I have to schedule my vacation as well... I just don't want people to waste their money and be disappointed in the hunt.. Most doe and spike hunts are no brainer hunts. Most times our hunters tag out the first evening..

If you are seeing 25 a night I will come hunt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the problem this year.. I would easily guarantee 25 deer a night on my worst stand in most years. The drought and late planting on the wheat and oat fields has really hurt my hunting

I think heads up was right call. Being a hunting or fishing guides is a lot harder than most can imagine. Each client has different expectations.

If you gave them the option to either proceed with the hunt or schedual some place else like you said then they shouldnt be upset. If I were in thier shoes I would appreciate the call and I would still proceed with the hunt but with lower expectations.
