to finally get a chance to hunt that big buck.
saw him one evening about a week and a half ago chasing 3 does but didn't have the guts to pull one off at 300 yards.
Hope I put him down this evening!
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I wouldn't have shot at 300 yards on a trophy either. Tough call, but the right one.
Good luck.
I'm heading out friday to take my shot at a very mediocre buck. What can I say? We play the hands we're dealt.

I wouldn't have shot at 300 yards on a trophy either. Out of curiosity, what does being a "trophy" have to do with it? If you cant hit a "trophy" at 300 you cant hit a doe or pig or anything else. Not saying its right or wrong I just hear people say it and wonder if they become better shots on doe for some reason.

My best shot ever was on a doe and I shot calmly and with confidence. Had it been a trophy buck I cant say the same. Also, IMHO most people classify hogs as vermin. I'll take a shot on a hog I'd never try on any buck. If it runs off wounded and dies who cares? I don't think alot of hunters stay awake thinking about the hogs they lost.

I'll lob shots at pigs all day and night. I can hit out that far, I'm just not going to risk it on a deer. I probably wouldn't shoot a trophy much past 200, even though I've shot plenty of does at that distance, because the chance of missing or wounding it would exceed the chance of it just coming closer on it's own.

Not saying its right or wrong I just hear people say it and wonder if they become better shots on doe for some reason. i shot a cull at a little over 300 yards. had to shoot him twice and got him both times....but i shot just to see if i could do it. I'll hopefully get on him at around 150 yards. Oh, and there will be pictures!

I like how people get to play God on deciding the value of an animals life. Just a pig who cares, a doe ah hell she aint got a rack, but a "trophy" its life is worth more because you decided it was.

You need to pay attention a little better. It's the simple fact that a big rack makes u shake. I don't get the fever over a doe or pig but a monster comes out and I'll be shaking. Has nothing to do with the animal or how we value there life.

Hell yeah a trophy is worth more. Go to any high fence operation and tell them you want to spend the same amount to shoot a doe as a 170 B&C. You'll get laughed off the place. And every hunter decides whether an animal lives or dies based on a bunch of different factors including what value the animal has to him. Its not called playing God its called hunting. Maybe this sport is not for you.

A trophy's life is worth more because it is factually worth more. Monetarily and personally to me. And I've already stated that I won't take long shots at does either. Pigs are a whole different story. Unless you wouldn't smash a cockroach in your house, you have no room to talk on people not caring about pigs.

200 yards is about tops for me on a deer, and that's with a solid rest and being 'locked in',hogs are a different story however.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I respect a man who knows his limitations when hunting and stays within them. The OP sounds like an ethical hunter to me who shouldn't be ripped for passing on a 300 yard shot...especially if the buck got his heart rate going.
