Thank you for trying to find him a home. I think if you put an ad in your local paper and/or elsewhere listing him with a price (say $300 or $400) and offer to take prospective new owners out to field test him with a couple of pigeons or quail, people will be much more likely to come have a look at him — compared to just offering him for free.

If you don't have time to take people out for what could be several field tests, maybe just go out once on your own time and make a video to later show people responding to your ad. Even if all you have to video him with is your phone...

Good luck to you. Please keep us posted.

I just saw two GSP's listed on another thread that were at the Grapevine shelter - different dogs? I am a Lab breeder and trainer, and a waterfowler. I am just getting back into upland hunting after some 30+ years. I know little to nothing about GSP's, but I'm pretty dog savvy, have trained retrievers for over a decade and can read/watch a DVD. Also know several folks with upland dogs (variety of breeds) as well as other trainers.

I am seriously considering taking on one of these GSP's I've seen listed, so I can get started with a dog that already knows what to do. I'll have to have a trainer then train me so I can make the most of him. What do y'all GSP folks think?

It's a risk to take on one of the dogs, of any breed that is up for adoption. I'd take the risk if the dog was not agressive, toward other dogs and people, if it were not soft.

Pointing dogs are naturals. All you have to do is to keep them pointed. The e-collar will help in that area. It's a pretty simple process.

Look it over carefully before you take it on.

There is more to it than simply, yes, he points birds. Does he run like you want him to, or does he cling to you like a cuckleburr, or maybe run off every time he hits the ground? Both are exasperating. Does he get along with other dogs, or had he just as soon fight as hunt? Maybe he eats birds, or simply has health issues.

My point is, there may well be a reason this dog is up for adoption. Most people I know would hesitate to give up a good birddog this time of year, when one might still get an invite or opportunity to use one.

I am not saying you can't get a good one given to you, I've seen it happen. But more often than not, there is a reason someone is so willing to give away their hunting companion. I'd do some askin' around. Rather than following the old adage about gift horses, I say ALWAYS look a gift dog in the mouth.

Now after having spouted off, I will say that I have a male English Pointer I might be willing to part with....

HOLD ON Bubba....if the shoe don't fit, it don't fit. I already admitted I was just poppin' off. I hope you do find a home that is a good fit for him. Any good dog deserves that for sure.

Thanks y'all, for the comments and the PM's. I've got one space for this special upland hunter in a world of Labs & Anatolians, so I've got to make the most of it. I am weighing in all the input folks were kind enough to share and will then take what I think seems to be the logical course of action. Thanks again, I really appreciate y'all taking the time to share your thoughts.

Bubba

My bigggest concern is that he gets along with other dogs. I have a GSP and a lab already.... I would be interested in taking him in if he gets along with the dogs I already have.. pm me and maybe we can worj it out.
