When I took my CHL the instructor (a detective) said that Glocks were carried by 52% of their force but accounted for 84% of AD the year before (2009).
I really like my Glock 19 - after I put a safety on it I now love it.

It's easy to envision situations that could cause a glock to accidentally discharge when things other than a finger get in contact with the trigger. I don't think those odd ball events are what is being referenced though. I personally like snug fitting kydex holsters. I would be interesting to see how many discharges occured while holstering.
I've had a couple discharges myself and a few more in my presence. I'm curious how they would be labeled.
I was hunting with a borrowed .223 wsm and discovered that the "trigger job" someone had performed caused the rifle to fire everytime the it was taken off safety. I considered that an accidental discharge since I hadn't touched the trigger.
I was shooting an SKS and had a jam. I racked the bolt to toss out the casing. When the bolt slammed shut the gun slam fired off the rest of the mag. I consider this one accidental since no finger on trigger.
I let a guy try my 1911. He was shooting DOA pistol with a heavy long trigger pull. The 1911 fired way before he intended it to. The round went somewhere down range. So, I guess I was class it as an unintended discharge instead of accidental or negligent.
I was shooting a pump action .22. I loaded 8 rnds and fired 8 rnds. I then racked the pump and dry fired a few times to assure empty. I was then standing there talking, getting ready to pack up and had the gun pointed straight down pulled the trigger on the final dry fire. Boom, the ninth round fired. Apparently one 22lr round had been in the tubular mag for awhile and just never cycled. This one is a negligent.
My elderly father and I was hunting. He loaded loaded four rounds into his deer rifle and hunted the evening. Back at the truck, he unloaded three rounds and went to dry fire on the empty gun but of coursed fired off the fourth round. Again negligent.
Now an odd ball one. Two twenty something years old men were sighting in a scoped single shoot .22 lr at a farm in the country. They went to inspect the target leaving a unloaded .22lr sitting on the shooting bench located in the back yard of house. 3 1/2 yr old boy walks over picks up gun and shoots large rooster in the butt. The way grandma and mama were screaming, I believe everyone on the place was considered negligent. I was the kid. I didn't get a wippin but I had to help pick the rooster.

Adraper, that is about the most thought out explanation on this thread, although I believe a person can commit all three. Thanks. I am sorry, I thank you (This correction brought to you by those to appease the grammar police). I try to not take much of anyone's word as gospel unless they have proven to be a reliable source, and even then they are only a reliable source to me. That fact is why I came to the forum for more information. "Studies" can be twisted to present the will of the financial backer easily, where as experience is a better ground for information for me. The LEO was speaking about being at a convention but did not specify that the information was from a colleague over a beer, presented in a class, or from a representative at a product booth. I do know it is a very popular handgun with LEO and CC permit holders which is why I was considering the possibility of numbers over percentages. He did say "among law enforcement agencies," so that controls some numbers. I believe there are accidental, negligent, and unintentional discharges of all firearms, but was simply curious about this "fact" I was given.

No such thing as an accidental discharge. Negligence is always involved. Inanimate objects lack the ability to do anything on their own. AGREED!

So for the negligence only crowd.
ac·ci·den·tal adj \ˌak-sə-ˈden-təl\
Definition of ACCIDENTAL
1: arising from extrinsic causes : incidental, nonessential
2a : occurring unexpectedly or by chance b : happening without intent or through carelessness and often with unfortunate results
neg·li·gence noun \ˈne-gli-jən(t)s\
Definition of NEGLIGENCE
1a : the quality or state of being negligent b : failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances
2: an act or instance of being negligent
To me there are stories of discharges falling under either category. Some may even be considered both. I assume there is one make of firearm that leads today in "going boom when it wasn't suppose to" and that may change tomorrow or even this afternoon.
One thing I believe we can all agree upon is that there is nothing like a big ol' spoon to stir the $#!*.

The Army Dropped the Term Accidental Discharge and switchedto Negligent discharge. The reason they made to name switch so they could fry you with UCMJ actions. It was too hard for them to get you convicted on an accident but Negligence is automatically your fault. So what if your equipment is made by the cheapest bidder. No Most AD/NG are operator error. Occasionaly....very occassionally it is a manufacturer problem.
I did used to hear stories from some older guys about the first browing Auto Shotguns. Something about pulling the trigger once and it would go into full auto dove hunting.

DAD. ____-___ Discharge.
It happens.
The first rule, is never point the muzzle at something you are not willing to destroy. That's even better than finger on trigger only when sights are on target.

I don't know about today, but a few years ago the number of handguns sold in the US were:
1) Smith and Wesson 2) Ruger 3) Glock 4) Beretta 5) SigArms 6) Taurus
Bet that's pretty close today

In terms of unit sales you're still correct, However Glock still rules in LEO sales and has the highest profit margin per unit of any company. Consider it the Southwest Airlines of the gun industry. Ruger rocks in terms of profit too, but Smith despite large volume sales has struggled. A goodly portion of total sales has been the Sigma series. The fun is going to just get started when Freedom Group picks up a pistol manufacturer or converts Remington into a major player in the handgun market. Glock is probably not for sale, but Para may be and CZ would be a natural.

I was doing an investigation into some gangsters showing off a glock around the kitchen table. It went off and went through the guys head. None of them said they had their finger on the trigger?

I can tell you from experience, I have dropped my Glock 23, chambered many times and it has never gone off once.
I carry daily, all day and have to remove it alot for different situations, in doing so, I can remember dropping it atleast 4 or 5 times and nothing happening.
I would have to say as long as the trigger isn't modified or touched, it shouldn't go off, even if dropped.
Modern hand guns have firing pin blocks that require you to pull the trigger before the pin can contact the bullet.

a buddy of mine accidentally discharged his XD-9. He was taking it apart to clean it but forgot to drop the loaded mag that was in it. Racked the slide back, flipped the takedown lever, hit the slide release (chambering a round) and pulled the trigger (necessary for takedown)and BANG. Bullet sailed through two walls, a kitchen cabinet into the attic and lodged into a rafter. Lucky nobody was in the flight path.

No such thing as an accidental discharge. Negligence is always involved. Inanimate objects lack the ability to do anything on their own. Like they say at work when you strike a stationary object. Somebody done somethin', haha. But I will be watching this as a Glock owner.

I heard that some years back that we had an officer fire his Glock at the station when he was going to clean it. If you know Glocks you know the steps are.
1. Drop the mag 2. Clear the chamber 3. Pull the trigger 4. Remove the slide and then clean the parts you want to clean.
He forgot step 1.
That means he racked a round out, put another round in, and pulled the trigger---Bang.
Also, I can't count how many times that I have heard Glocks bad mouthed because they don't have a safety. Tell me how many double-action revolvers have safeties.

With the new design you no longer have to pull the trigger to take it apart.

I've carried a Glock daily for the past 12 or so years. I've never had negligent discharge and it went through a motorcycle collision where I skidded down the road on my Glock and arse for 140 feet.
Oh yeah, I also NEVER place my finger on the cotton pickin' trigger until I'm ready to make it go boom.

The almighty plastic fantastic..
I saw a sales rep take a glock and beat the tar out of the thing and it wouldn't fire.. You had to hit the trigger safety.. I always thought it was a good idea.. The trigger safety.. Still I like my wife's xp sub compact better for her.. It has the trigger safety and a grip safety.. Both have to be activated at the same time along with a long pull to fire.. Makes it pretty safe..
When in doubt.. Empty the magazine
