1. Have you ever shot before? 2. Whoever is shooting with you, how experienced are they? 3. What kind of background do you have? Outdoor life or city life? 4. What is the main use for your gun; deer, squirrels, rabbits, yotes, pigs, targets, cans?

243 would be a good starter caliber. It has enough bang to knock down any deer in Texas (with right shot placement) but it won't knock your teeth out. The Marlin XS7 is a good shooter and won't break the bank.

OK, well if you are wanting something for hunting, depending on your size, I'd go for a .243 bolt action rifle, maybe something a little larger if you are larger Good luck

What is the main use for your gun; deer, squirrels, rabbits, yotes, pigs, targets, cans? ^^^^^These are important questions^^^^^ Without answers to those, I can only suggest a Lever .22 like the Browning Micro or the Henry Youth.

Sorry to be the stick in the mud, but yesterday I watched a story on one of the " main networks " about illegal buys off the internet. There needs to be a legal adult doing the buying and training.

Start with a bolt action single shot .22 with iron sights, learn fundamentals of shooting with lots of reps with a gun that is inexpensive to shoot. Then you can move on to learning a scope and centerfire rifles..
just my .02

texasjhj, I'm only speaking first hand for my self here... As a parent myself, I find it uncomfortable talking to someone else's youngster about something that requires a LOT of responsibility to own or use. My suggestion is that you first have this conversation with your own parents, or another adult figure with whom you have a good relationship. I am a stranger to you, and you to me. I respect, and actually appreciate your interest in learning more. But, I would also ask that you appreciate my opinion as a concerned parent. No disprespect to you, sir. Just common courtesy. Good luck!

I agree, you need your parents on board with this, I would suggest a 22 bolt action as well and make each shot count.

Yes sir, I did. I figured if he has access to the internet, he has an adult in his life somewhere. That's why I stated my comment as I did. Somebody loves that little feller enough to wish he was asking those questions to them...and I shouldn't be the one stealing that thunder. At least that's my thought. As I said, I was only speaking for myself and offering my own opinion. I wish him well. Thanks. That will be my last comment on this post.

Have y'all thought that maybe he has talked to his parents and now he is doing his research on what caliber he wants to ask for as a Christmas present? It is that time of year.
Young man, I'm glad you are interested in learning more. An inexpensive option would be a Rossi single shot. There are a couple of different setups, but they can come with up to 3 different barrels that can be swapped to different calibers. This should allow you to grow into a bigger gun as your experience grows as well. Good luck.

You're doing good papa. Keep a rifle in one hand, a fishing pole in the other and a baseball bat for good measure and he'll turn out just fine. Seems like a pretty good kid to me.

He did well. You should be proud. He came to the right place for good advice and I have seen some youth rifles going by lately. Might find a .243 on the back pages waiting for an new home.

Grandpa moved me from .22 to Grandma's Mini-14 for Texas Deer. I never shot one with it, but I had great fun trying. A .243 is a good choice also.

That would be a good selection for versatility and price

but it won't knock your teeth out. To me this is very important. Call me a pansy but I still can't shoot a high recoil gun accurately at the age of 33 and been shooting since a kid. From your dads list of guns you have experience with I'd say learn to shoot a .223 consistantly first.
