Is there any danger of tracer ammo starting a fire?
(ok I mean any more danger than regular ammo)

My local range had a fire start because somebody was shooting tracer ammo. He "had no idea" what the red tip meant.

Yes, I know of a range that had to call the brush trucks out twice due to tracers. Usually a good dirt burm takes care of it, but sometimes the phoshorus comes off the back in route to the target. They're fun, but be careful.

Yes, they are a huge fire risk. Be very carefull where the round goes, and don't shoot any tracers when the ground is dry, like during a dought!

even when there is a heavy morning dew, when ball ammo is pretty safe, tracers will burrow a few inches into the ground and break up scattering fire accross the surface.

Yes. One thing I did learn from tracer ammo was how much just shooting into grass can deflect a bullet. While shooting an M 240B using 7.62 ammo (basicaly a .308) with a tracer every 5th round I was shocked as I was pouring lead into a grassy area as to how many of my tracers were being turned skyward from the grass itself! Good learning expierience. They would enter the grass and were comming out at all kinds of different angles heading back up. You could actually watch the grass deflect the bullet and see it deflect off the outer grass and never enter the heart of the clumps.

It did not catch the grass on fire as in my situation it would have been helpful. Guess it is like everthing else, when you want it to work it won't, when you don't it will.

On a night range firing 50cal I watched a 50cal tracer come back towards the firing line. Glad it fell short, but made me think about the rounds that where not tracers. I also watched many ranges catch fire with tracers. X2 on the not while burn bans or in effect.

Panther, That's interesting. I've always wondered.
