Picked up a new gun and didn't do my homework before hand... However I now have a custom made 6.5 mm Remington Magnum and after some research I see I will be making my own rounds as they are kind of scarce. Not a big deal, always wanted to reload and looks like I have a reason to do so now. The gun actually came with a set of dies (spelling).

I read the sticky thread about getting into reloading and found allot of good info no there. I'm going to continue my research and start planning what equipment I'll buy etc. But I have a couple questions, might be stupid but I'm asking anyway.

1. Is there any retailer or supplier that would be best to utilize in procurement of reloading equipment?
2. Are the load charts I'm finding on line a reliable source? I didn't realize how much info is out there on reloading.
3. I know this one will be more of a matter of opinion, but does anyone have any experience with 6.5 mm Remington Magnum?

Ok, I'm going to see what I can find out. I apprecaite any and all info.

Kevin

1) I like to buy from Graf's, Gene Sears Supply, Powder Valley and sometimes Midwayusa.
2) Depends on who made the charts. Look at the powder mfg website for good data.
3) 6.5 RM is a nice little magnum, and should shoot good.

Let me know if you need any ammo fot it. I can load any bullet you like, and even send you some test loads to shoot and see what works best. I load a lot of 6.5mm rounds. Hope this helps.

Chad

It has essentially the same case capacity as the 6.5/06. Which means it fits in right between the 270 and 25/06. That makes it pretty hard to beat as a Texas deer cartridge. Congrats on the rifle.

Pics would be nice! (hint)

I might have to do that as I need to dial this thing in and hopefuilly hunt with it this year. I'm looking around to see what would be a good load, weight for varmit, and deer. From what I can tell, it's a 1903 A3 action with a 26" Remington Barrell. Set in what looks like a BDL stock. I'm going to put a better scope on it in the next week or two and then hopefully get it dialed in. Curious to see how this thing shoots, ballistics I've been reading aren't to bad.

PM or email me what you would recommend for a load. And the price, and turnaround time on getting them if you don't mind.

Thanks,
Kevin

I'll get some pics when I get home, I have it sitting in the vise on the workbench. Had to take the wife out to shoot her new .45 yesterday evening. I wanted to shoot this rifle, but in time. After the past 20 hrs of reading on reloading I'm getting excited, never thought past just buying rounds. Reloading brings shooting to a whole new level.

Ammunition for this caliber is available off the internet -- it's just expensive!

That's what I've found, Remington apparently doesn't make the 120 gr they had been producing. And from anywhere to $60-$80 for a box of shells I see reloading as a no brainer. So I'll pony up and buy a box or two to get me started and then try my hand at reloading. And from what I'm reading you have more control on your round by loading it yourself (if done correctly). I need to quit reading about this round, and reloading and get back to work... I'm becoming consumed by all of this. But it's making my Monday a whole lot better!

Appreciate all the input!

Looking at the factory ammo options, they are ok, but very expensive. If you handload the rounds, you can load any 6.5mm bullet of your choice. There are a lot of good, high BC bullets to choose from.

for palces to buy reloading equipmebt and componants the list Chad gave plus Sinclair Inc, Natches Shooting Supply and Midsouth are some others. When buying online I shop around for best price.

For the data online I prefer to go with the powder companies data. The Nosler 6th edition reloading manual has new data from them for the 6.5 RM since it was not in the pevious edition.

I know there are some fans of the 6.5 Remington Magnum on the forum that haven't spoke up yet. I have been a fan of that cartridge for years just never bought one. I have its big brother the 350 Remington Magnum and really like it. I also shoot a 6.5-284 that I really liks and it has almost the same case capacity of your round (2grains less actually). For powders I would not be supprtised to find Hodgdon 4831SC or Reloader 22 might be some of your favorites in the future.

Good looking rifle, 03s can be some sweet actions

I started reloading with a Lee Kit for a 30-30 soon will be 35 years ago. And still use LEE equipment for a lot of my reloading

Talked with Chad (dallas reloads) and I'm going to order some through him to get me going, site it in, and hopefully hunt this year with it. That will give me some time to put together my reloading equipment, I don't like rushing into things like that. Apprecaiate all the info!

Well here's an update, I've been busy with life... and finally got things in line.

Chad loaded me up some rounds (129 grain Hornady SST ), and it's a nice looking little cart. can't wait to see how it shoots this weekend.

I was cleaning it and the scope on it was crap, so I picked up a illuminated mil dot scope for now. Got it mounted last night and bore sighted. Planning on dialing it in and then heading to my buddys ranch to help eliminate some coyotes and hogs. Can't wait to see how this thing shoots.

Everyone be safe and have a good'un!

Will do, looks like only 8-14 mph winds this weekend so hopefully I can get a feel for this gun before engaging any critters with it. Even thinking about taking off early from work and try to get it dialed in. I'm curious to see how consistent this thing shoots, the barrel looks almost new so that's a good thing. I'll give you a full report Chad.

Ok, it actually was rainy all weekend so I chose not to put the gun in the weather to shoot. Did find a range with a 200 yd lane 15 min from the house. Can't wait to shoot, and see how this thing does.

Yeah Schwenkes, and yeah this is Caseys buddy. Went and shot Sat. Gun shoots great. Ammo is good Chad. Range started getting packed so I left early. Had a good 1/2-3/4 groups at 100. I'll go back soon and see how much more I can improve.

After shooting the 6.5 it was a reality shock going to my 30.06. It kicks a tad more. Still a good evening of shooting.

Sounds good, I think you will find the 6.5 Mag to be a fun and versital round. High BC bullets and I would not hesitate to use it with good bullets on critters up to Elk size
