I took my dad, friend, and my two boys duck hunting Saturday and it was a duck hunt to remember. We ended up with 21 total birds. We would have had more, but my boys didn't want to shoot too many. This hunt was over in about 45 minutes and it was crazy. I was trying to watch and help my boys. I was trying to train Deuce and I was trying to keep Izzy from going crazy due to the thousands of birds. I was hunting too. I have not seen this many birds since I have had Izzy and she didn't know what to do. We were shooting them so fast we had 4 or 5 on the water at a time. That really confused Izzy. Deuce was lost. It was a great hunt, but not one to train a dog during. Here are some pictures, but the rest will be in the migratory section.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Good deal, having your dad and boys out there when the ducks are really coming in. When a great hunt like that happens you just have to leave the dog training for another day.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Looks like y'all had a great time! Wish I could've been there. I saw a couple dozen mallards out there last weekend when I was deer hunting.
I love it when there are so many birds the dogs don't know which way to go...

Looks like a blast. I bet the dogs learned more than you think that day. A few more hunts like that and they'll be duck hunting pros.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

im no trainer for duck dogs but I went on my first duck hunt today and took one of my patterdales out with me and 2 buddies. to my amazement (this dog has never stopped amazing me), Athena watched every bird come into the tank and retrieved the first 3 without any command. she swam out to two more but left them, and im fairly certain it was because they were dead. she is bred to find and kill small game, onces it stops moving she isnt interested anymore. 17lb dog made me proud in that cold water with no vest, no whistle and no training, i love seein natural ability achieved in the right environments.
