I do not post much on here ususally on tff. Tonight I took my two sons and a friend pig hunting. No pigs a couple coyotes tho.
As we go to leave I stopped and told the kids 14,15 and 12 to make averything safe. unload guns and put all of the guns up to go home. all of the sudden a shot rings out.... my sons friend shot my truck...
at this point I can start joking or making fun of him but i want to put it out here for a wake up call.

it is my fault for not taking more precautions.all three have been thru hunters safety and all three have been out with me several times.

please be safe and use this as a reminder

How did he shoot your truck? Thank goodness nobody was in front of him. Did the gun just go off? Why did he pull the trigger? Glad everyone is ok

A few years ago I had what was supposed to be 2 hunters from Houston out to shoot a couple of does. Well they showed up with 3 instead of 2 people. I did not like it but I had no choice but to put the extra person in the back of the truck. He had a lever action 30-30. I told everyone to make sure their guns were unloaded. We were driving to the stands and the guy in the back gun went off. I stopped and got out and asked what the hell is going on. He said he was playing around with the hammer and it went off. Luckly no one was shot. I took the whole bunch back to their vehicle and told them I never wanted to see or hear from them again.

The gun is a bolt action 243. unloading he worked the bolt, since it was pointed down one fell into the chamber. after closing the bolt he pulled the trigger by "mistake".

Again I hope others can learn from our mistake.

bullet went thru wiring harnes and off transfer case.going to call ins. co this morning..

Those things can happen in an instant, to anyone...not just youngsters. Fortunately, no-one was hurt. Thanks for the reminder.

My FIL told me a story about him shootin a hole through the floorboard of his dads truck when he was a kid. Anybody who sat in the passenger seat had to put their foot over the hole to keep the gas smell out of the cab. Glad everyone is ok.

That's why I bought my son a bolt gun that you could work the bolt with the safety on. Lots of them require the safety to be off before you can work the action. Glad nobody was hurt and hopefully he learned a good lesson from it.

Yup. Gotta have the 3-stage safety.

Saw a white Ford P/U the other day that had a nasty bullet hole in the RR door with something written around the "exit wound" about an AD (accidental discharge), oopps, carelessness or something to that nature. Ya'll be careful.

Friend, I wouldn't harm thee for all the world, but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.

That's why I won't take a kid hunting until he turns 35. Glad the only damage was to your truck.

Don't feel alone. Friend of mine shot out my back window of my truck while loading his rifle after taking it out of the case in the back seat. Oh, He is a police officer, (city withheld) btw.

Saw another Police Officer shoot his locker on accident. Everyone in the briefing room jumped in unisome. Know another cop who was putting a pistol in his waste band and shot himself in the Leg. Did alot of damage and that one may have been an actual failure of the safety. I know another police officer ( not all same dept) Who was clearing a jam with a screw driver at his deer cabin, and the screwdriver set off the rimfire as it was being pried out and he shot his TV.

If you handle firearms enough sooner or later you will have and accident. Mine is yet to come but I will always try to keep my weapon pointed in a safe direction in the meantime.

If you think my post was long winded about AD's you should be glad I left all the ones out I saw in Iraq! That is a LOOOOOOONG list! Ok, Ok, one more. I saw a SGT Major walk up to a clearing barrel in front of the chow hall. Instead of sliding his 9mm slide back inspecting the chamber and then squezzing the trigger into the barrel, he just walk up took off the safety and went BAM! right into the barrel. Being a SGM and a little embarrased at this time. He worked the slide and ejected the round out of the chamber and put it back into the barrel then BAM! He forgot to drop the magazine and when he racked it the second time he just reloaded it. Could not have happened to a nicer guy.

You folks who have'nt read any of the Hunter Safety should...College Boys wrote it and I doubt many knew much about
hunting or guns other than what they've read or seen in a museum.

The course is only as good as the instructors...My Dad was in both WW1, and WW2...he was a hard trainer..If I wish to go with
him hunting, I had to completely break down, screws, trigger, and
all of his Model 11 Rem. shotgun..clean and re assemble..Took me
3 days when I was 5...Had my own gun...he carried the shells..Said if I pointed in the wrong direction or at someone
he'd whip me with the gun, and wrap it around a tree..Only need
one lesson...DD

The vast majority of shooting-related accidents don't happen while hunters are in their stands but in other places, and especially around vehicles. That's because so many people make it common practice to load their guns before leaving the vehicle and then don't unload it until they get back. For that reason, if you wait until you get into your stand to load your firearm and unload it before you leave, you greatly reduce your chances of having a shooting-related accident. The numbers do not lie.

Still, many people refuse to do this, thinking they might miss a chance shot at some game animal. They take the approach that is what a safety was made for. I'm sure everyone of those who became involved in a shooting accident felt the same way.

I always wait until I am in my stand before I chamber a round, and unchamber it before leaving. I value the peace of mind it gives me much more the fear of not getting a chance at a deer. No deer is that dang important anyway.

I with Dan on this one. I've made a pack with all our hunters, guns unloaded until in stand and unloaded before you get out. Put in the rack with an open bolt. Glad the only damage was to your truck!
