i am going on a management hunt for meat deer and unlimited varmints. I was told by the ranch owner that there is an abundance of fox in the area along with yotes and bobcat. I would love to harvest some foxes and since I have only seen one in person I am not sure what the best way to take one without destroying the hide is? I am taking a 22 mag and a 223. from what I remember a texas fox is the same body size as a big house cat, is that accurate? if so wouldnt a 22mag blast a big hole in the fox? i am finally graduating college saturday the 17th and this is the only hunting i will get to do this year since i dont have a lease. I wish i could get on a buck hunt but i will take meat in the freezer any day. i appreciate the help guys

I get up to Maryland once a year and do my fair share of fox hunting. My favorite fox cartridge is a 204 ruger but i also use a 22-250 for long shots or super windy nights. If you wont be shooting super far i would go with the 22mag. my 204 bullet of choice is the blitzking.
This was a morning after pic from last year

12 ga or 10 ga for fox close range. Then smaller caliber rifles for more distance so you don't mess the pelts up

What are you going to use the fur for? I don't care for shotgunned animals for mounting at all. The .22 mag will do the job most of the time, but have had some animals run off if the shot isn't exact.

I shoot them with a .22 LR and it does the job. Every fox I have shot with it has dropped in its tracks. And it doesn't mess up the fur. We have better luck calling them at night though. Foxes are pretty curious and we call them up with in 30 yards a lot of the time. We set out a call and use a red light and check the area about every 5-10 minutes.

well this may sound dumb to alot of folks but I think a native american style coat with 5 or 6 fox pelts around a nice coyote fur or just the fox fur if I get enough. the shots will be 100 yards or less so the 22 mag will be my choice i guess. one other question then, head shot, neck shot, or lung shot?

those are beautiful man and they look alot bigger than a house cat. I wonder if there are anything beside gray fox down on the border in del rio???

I would think a .22mag would be just about the perfect round for fox.

Thanks Gtowncowboy. i would say lung shots for sure. fox are very small and a head shot at a 100 yards with a 22mag can be difficult. Fox have a thick coat if you look at then skinned out they are very small this is one nights bounty. I shot many many fox and My mom did get a coat made from several of them. there might be a few reds but primarily greys down there. I've shot a few greys here in Tx.

here was one I got back a few months ago

high powered 2 shot in a 12 ga will do you good out to 40 yds or so. 22 mag at 100 should be fine. they dont stay still to long so be ready to shoot when they stop.
