As some of yall know I am still at the lease (that’s why I aint posting much) and I had something happen today I have never had happen in my life.

I took my Ruger 350 Rem Mag out for some pig action today. After owning this gun for years and never killing something with it I had a feeling this was going to be the day. Well sure enough about 5:15pm I had about 12-15 pigs come in at about 20 yards. I raised the gun, took it off safety, then squeezed the trigger…………..CLICK!!!!!! Yep it didn’t go BANG! The pigs scattered like rats. At first I thought it was a simple case of me forgetting to chamber a round, then I thought maybe I didn’t push the 3 position safety all the way forward, then I opened the bolt and found out it was just a dud. First failure to fire in my life and it was with factory Remington ammo.

So how many of yall have had the same thing happen????

Oh…….and the pigs did return and I took out 2 of them with my last 2 shots. Pics to come when I get back to civilization.

Did the primer get hit right or you been there so long the dirt has clogged the firing pin smile

I have had it happen 2 times shooting a friends Mossberg ATR
30-06. That gun has probably done it 10 times. I believe it has a weak fireing pin spring

If it was indented good probally a bad round of ammo.

Last time I shot anything with my 350 was pigs 80 and 140lbs. It did hammer them. 2 with one shot from about 135 yards, one through the head the other through both shoulders with nice exit wounds. But that bullet is not available in factory ammo. Nosler 225gr Partition.

Our good friend Brandon972 had it happen on a little hunting expedition a while back. Same spike, two days in a row. First day my rifle with Hornady Steel Match. Misfire. Second day with his rifle- bolt not completely into battery. Same little buck both times, walked away unscathed...

That's right. Being a Remington product it's surprising it didn't go off by itself bolt

I've have had it happen once. I was sighting in my Remington 700 VTR in 308 using factory Hornady SST 150gr. It hit the primer good but no bang. Next round and every one since has gone bang.

It's one of 2 things. The primer is bad or the firing pin didn't hit it hard enough. If there is a large dent in the primer (not a slight divit), then it hit it hard enough and is a bad primer. I have seen anvils missing out of primers. The anvil is what the firing pin crushes to ignite the primer. If there is no anvil, there is no boom. I have also seen a round with multiple firing pin strikes, and everything else be in place (on inspection after pulling the bullet and inspecting the primer), and still not go boom. When you shoot enough, it will happen.

Honestly I don’t fault Remington or Ruger. I think its understandable that when a company produces millions or rounds of ammunition every year that there are going to be a handful that will be duds. I just happen to get one of them at a very bad time. At least it didn’t cost me a big buck though. I have always heard it will happen at some point if you shoot long enough and yesterday was just my time. I have shot Remington ammo all my life and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Thoroughbred Rifles and I were doing load development on a rifle he built me in .300RUM. There was a pop and [censored] flew all in my face. I was wearing eye pro as usual so it was not an issue. We took the round apart and the brass did not have a flash hole.

Custom Reloads of Dallas and I shot a team match together. He was spotting for me and there was click. I reloaded quickly. You should have seen his face as the ejected round with heavy dented primer came flying at him. He grabbed it and threw it away afraid it would cook off. It was just a random bad FGGM primer.

Anything can happen with mass produced factory components. Whether it be your brass, primer, rifle, etc.

I will never forget that!!! Scared the crap out of me! I'm staring at a live round 4" infront of my nose while looking through a scope that had a nice firing pin hit. I was waiting for the "boom"!

Put it back in the gun and see if it punches off the round. If not wait like you did, several seconds and try it on a warmer day.

I think you had posted it was real cold and sometimes to much grease, oil or dirt on the firing pin will make it a little sluggish.

I do know of another person who was using Remington ammo in a browning A-bolt in very cold weather and had the same problem. I do not like Remington rifle ammo but that's just me. confused2

I have seen new rifles that had some of the factory grease still on/in them. Cold temps really makes that grease tacky and that could have been the culprit.

Years ago my cousin attempted to shoot a buck on a particularly cold morning with a new rifle that he failed to thoroughly clean and remove the factory grease. The rifle failed to fire 3 times in a row. Later he cleaned the rifle thoroughly and it was never an issue again.
