Just wondering from people on here with experience in bow hunting what distances do you practice at and what type of groups do you try to average? I've been practicing at about 30 yards and getting about 3 inch groups. Just wondering what kind of groups would be considered good.

for target shooting 1" groups no matter what distance cuz thats the size of your target. hunting I use a 5" paper plate out to 80 yards and that keeps me happy no matter where it hits.

Yeah that's what I was thinking and it looked like you want to hit the heart so you can avoid tracking or loosing the deer. I've noticed an improvement over the past week, I know as I keep practicing I'll keep getting better. I'm going to be in Africa in a few months and I'm planning on taking my bow. I could bring guns if I wanted, I have the government connections to bring whatever I want, but I'd end up with a lengthy shopping list of officials asking me to bring them something so I'm going to avoid that on this trip.

20 and 30 yards shots all arrows have to be touching if you shooting groups. I put several 1" dots on my target and shoot and them individually so that I don't mess up arrows. 40 and 50 yards have to be in a 2-3 inch group.

These are about about 33 yards with my competition bow, but a good rule of thumb (I don't care what anyone else says) is one inch groups per 10 yards. If you shooting 3 inch groups at thirty you doing fine.

Want a reality check. Stick your broad head on. Put your target bag out shoot 1 arrow a day at different yards with your broadhead. Then you'll know how it will unfold. Your only getting 1 shot in the field,

You are doing well with what you described if you are consistently getting that. Bob pegged it. The bad part is popping nocs, tearing up fletching and ruining arrows while hitting those tight groups. Yesterday at 30 yards me and a friend were tearing up arrows, sometimes the others, trying to get tight groups. That's why I like multiple spot targets.
And the one shot thing, well he is right. But if you practice good form and focus at home it will be automatic in the field. And I always try to shoot a few before each hunt. That way it's not always my "first" arrow.

Your only getting 1 shot in the field, I know many guys that do that each morning, it's call a "Cold Shot".. I do it with my long bows.

I know lots of people home in on their groups. But I've never figured out what archery activity there is where groups matter. What matters is hitting your point of aim. If you can hit a single 3" target at 30 yards with the first arrow you shoot at it almost every time, that's good. It doesn't matter if it's hunting or 3D competition, the first arrow is the only one that counts. Sometimes you get a second shot at a deer but I wouldn't bank on it. IT'S JUST MY OPINION but I think you should develop the mentality that the first arrow is the only one that matters. When deer season approaches, I take one arrow out back, shoot it, and go back in the house. But not everyone is as OCD about it as me. When I got serious about 3D, I moved down to a 3/4" square out to 50 yards. I'm a serious believer that the bigger your target is, the bigger your "group" is. But for hunting, that's not necessary. I've killed a bunch of deer with a bow and none were over 26 or 28 yards (now I can't remember which).
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Excellent post brother; I've certainly shot a whole lot more competition than hunted; the first arrow is the only one that counts in competition as well.. I worked on grouping to keep my form in check and most of my life I shot the Korean method and studied their ways; that is the reason they win the Gold consistantly! To them Archery is a way of life not a sport.

Korean method? Please explain X2 I would have to write a book about this method if you are not familar with how Korean's train and shoot. Here is a link that I've found, and this only touches about one percent of Korean Method is, but you'll understand that WE (Americans are not willing to put that much into Archery)Or the average shooter, there are many shooters not many archers.. http://www.texasarchery.org/Documents/KoreanTechnique/Ktech.htm
