"Houston We have a problem"

Not sure if this is the correct area for this post, but it does relate to hunting kind of. I have a squirrel that I have been trying to get out of my barn and am having no luck at all. The thing tore out the insulation to make a nest, which I have already taken care of. Now, the thing is crawling around inside the insulation blanket. I hate to blast it with my 12 gauge or even my pellet gun. I would think the holes in the roof would be awful inconvenient when it rains. This thing is driving me and my dog nuts. Any suggestions on how to get my problem solved?

Try to find out where he's coming in and out. Then go get about 9 of the cheap insect foggers, set them all off at once, and shut the doors up. Go outside and watch to see when he comes out. It would help if you could have a helper so you could have one person on opposite corners just in case. Try to blast him with the shotgun as soon as he's clear of the building. After he's out, try and squirrel proof the place he's been coming in which may be about impossible on that type of construction.

Or, you could get a live trap and bait it with some pecans. There will be people come on here and tell you it's illegal to trap them but you just have to weigh the consequences and decide how bad you want that squirrel to quit tearing up your insulation and aggrevating the pi$$ out of your dog. I've used the insect fogger method 3 or 4 times with great success in a house attic but I'm not sure how well it will work if he's well shielded from the fumes behind that plastic faced insulation.

They can be dam destructive and will often chew on wiring like it's candy. Once they start coming in, it can be an ongoing problem for years - I guess they tell their buddies about it or something. The less live ones there are running around your place, the less problems you'll have in the future. It's against the law to shoot them with an air rifle while hunting, but I've heard there are people who've eliminated a whole lot of problem squirrels that way from around their building structures.

You really owe it to yourself to call or PM TX Phantom.... known far and wide as the GREAT ERADICATOR of the elusive fuzzy tailed Rodentia Sciuridae (tree rat)

Fogging sounds like a good idea. I do have a mosquito fogger that I blow in the inusalation to smoke him out.

.22 short. Pecans or ok, but penut buttered rat poison on the roof, (I've been told ), works.

Go to HomeDepot or hardware store of your choice, and purchase the Rat GLUE traps. Buddy of mine in Atlanta, GA has the same problem, only the squirrl is in his attic. He was told by an exterminator that the traps for a large rat should do the trick. Let us know hou you make out.

I thought about glue traps last night also. I going to Home Depot first thing this morning to get some. Stay tuned.

I wish I could use the .17, but I would just be putting holes in my barn.

I tried the glue strips. I put about 10 peanuts on it and the thing somehow got all the peanuts off without getting stuck too bad.

Now, the squirrel just laughs and makes funny faces at me and my dog everytime we go into the barn.

We are headed back to Junction for about 10 or 12 days, but will set up a trap when we get back. THEN, will see who gets the last laugh!

Kind of reminds me of the TV ad where the 2 squirrels do a victory dance when they make the car swerve off the road.

So sorry for your problem. Keep us posted

Check with your local Feed Store. I'm sure they have some kind of bait to take care of the problem.

I'd use the pellet gun. If you get a hole in your barn just silicon the hole. It shouldn't be that big of a hole.

Thats illegal. You can't hunt game animals with an air rifle in TX.

Ok, I'd do the same as my other post with a 22 or 17.

I have squirrels in my attic and overhangs and it often sounds like they are playing baseball up there at 2 a.m. I have used the glue traps before and the momma squirrel got caught in it and left huge patches of fur all over it and than chewed the trap up to free its self. I also placed spring loaded rat traps with peanut butter and the traps got sprung often but once they were caught they would chew themselves free. I finally shot the momma squirrel with a 20 ga. and the squirrel looked liked it had the mange since it had huge pathches of fur gone from the glue trap and its leg was mangled from the spring trap. Needless to say the squirrels are back again. My 6 and 5 year old get stars by their name on the choir board for each squirrel they see that is succesfully erraticted with the pellet gun.

I have a metal roof and have plugged all the gaps with foam and steel wood. I did this when there was babies in the attic so the momma just chewed through the facia board to get in. My wife is concerened that I will tear the house down just to get the critters.
