Does anybody know if you can legally silence an airgun without a permit? I have a PCP airgun that is louder than a .22.I got one in the mail for it the other day and I need to know if I need to register it. Thanks.

Why go to all that trouble? Get a single shot .22 and use sub-sonic .22 longs in it. Mine is exceptionally quiet.

I think you would be fine to suppress an airgun without a permit. First of all, you wouldn't be able to buy an airgun suppressor if it was an NFA item unless you had the proper documentation/Form 4/ATF approval/tax stamp/etc. Also, I believe the suppressor restrictions relates to firearms...I do not believe an airgun is technically a firearm. However, I am not 100% sure on this.
I would love to see a before/after video!

first thing you need to know is, suppressors don't silence sonic crack.
If your projectile is crossing the sound barrier, aprox 1125fps, it's going to have some pop......and that, your silencer can't suppress
I you have a suppressor/silencer you must have a tax stamp no matter what the host weapon is, the paper work is for the can not the weapon. If you got one in the mail its not a suppressor.
but what the hell, have fun w/ your pop gun....

I dunno. I got a ticket back in High School for "discharging a firearm in the city limits"... and it was an airgun.

A silencer is a silencer regardless of what you put it on. If you would like you can read the NFA handbook chapter 2.1.7 where you will find the description of a silencer.
I can tell you this, if you don't have a form 1 or form 4 approved by BATFE in hand you are in violation of a bunch of laws.
I am a licensed silencer manufacturer and can tell you from personal experience, the ATF does not play around with this stuff. If you have anything they might consider to be a silencer and it has a means of attachment to any type of weapon air gun or other your going to be in trouble without the correct paperwork.
Hope that might be helpful.

Thanks for all the replys. here is were I got it http://www.tko22.com/ . They call them muzle breaks but they have baffles inside and make my pcp airgun nearly scilent. You do realize breaks have "baffles" as well??? Never refer to it as a supressor or silencer again. It is what they sold it as, a break, which are legal!

• Does not include feral hog (see Exotic Animals and Fowl, below). Now that I look at the regs again, maybe I'm wrong. I guess I was assuming that if a hog was not a non-game animal, it must be a game animal and subject to the regs mentioned above. Turns out it is an exotic and suppressors aren't mentioned in relation to those.

I have heard of the ATF going after some of these airsoft companies that make silencers strictly for airsoft toys. Reason being is that when the ATF tested some of them they actually reduced the report on real firearms. So, bottom line is be very careful what you get into as far as airsoft silencers.

The only way to LEGALLY make a suppressor for an air gun is to permanently attach it to the barrel. I could never come off without breaking it.

How are Gamo Whisper air rifles sold with "52% noise reduction"?
Does one have to spend and additional $200 for the ATF for the tax stamp?

How are Gamo Whisper air rifles sold with "52% noise reduction"?
Does one have to spend and additional $200 for the ATF for the tax stamp? I stand corrected. Here is the following from ATF website. Silencer 26 U.S.C. § 5845(a)(7) For the purposes of the National Firearms Act the term Silencer is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(24) The term “Firearm Silencer” or “Firearm Muffler” means any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for the use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication. The problem is that LEO and LATF agents are allowed to have their own interpretation of the law. The above clearly states that it is for a "firearm" and while you may others may have received tickets for discharging a firearm in city limits for firing an Air Rifle, these kind of things are blatant missuses of the law by LEO. My brother was also contacted by the ATF for selling Silencers for paintball guns on ebay. They politely informed him he was breaking their laws. While the warning was appreciated, the ATF's jurisdiction does not cover paintball guns or air rifles. As simple as it sounds, a firearm by definition must expel a projectile by use of burning(fire) "explosives" (powder), not a pre-compressed charge of air. The grey area comes in when "they" decide the intention of the silencers use. "they" can say the suppressor could be used for a firearm. the burden of proof lies with them for intent, but we all know how that works out when you are up against the Gov't.
