I have received a report from our neighboring high fenced game ranch that blue tongue is running rampid and has killed over 125 deer in the ranch. How concerned should I be with my free range deer across the fence? Know any precautions I should take?

Since Bluetongue is a virus and transmitted by midges then any deer as well as sheep or cattle in the area could be affected. So its likely it would cross the high fence.

Usually shuts down in colder weather. Hopefully it will die down pretty soon.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Was this a deer breeding facility? If so then they probably brought in deer from a different area of the state. My guess is they are northern bloodlines of deer also. Blue Tounge/EHD both are present in all areas of the state in one strain or another. The local deer have evolved (survived it) to be resistant to the local strain. Deer moved into the area from another area will not be as lucky in the right year and the right conditions. Like posted cold weather will shut it down. If it is a deer breeder that lost deer in his facility then I would not be as conserned.

I thought they shut down importing deer from other states with out permits and a clean health certificate.

They did that, but AI still allows breeders to breed northern bloodlines into their herds thinking they can raise bigger and better deer. Pure Northern Deer were here long before they shut the borders down also. Northern bloodlines are especially vulnerable to EHD/Blue Tongue even when you AI. Deer moved from South Texas to East Texas will have a different immune system for EHD/Blue Tongue for their home region and then have trouble with the new area. TPWD relocated deer across Texas years ago and have run into this situation in the past due to sporadic outbreaks in pockets across the state.

Ok we are on the same page then. The only reason I asked was as had a deer bought but was refused for permit do to shutting down transport of deer.
