This is getting old. Where should the shot placement be on an aoudad to knock him down and keep him down? My son and I were hunting this youth weekend and this big aoudad ram came charging in and ran the deer out from under the feeder. My son was quite disappointed until I told him he could shoot him if he wanted, but it would probably blow any chance at a deer. He pondered it while I sized up the ram. It looked to be close to 30" with really thick bases, a sure enough trophy. He decided to take the aoudad. He took his time and and waited for a broadside shot. He made what appeared to be a solid hit through the shoulder. The ram reared up and I thought he was going to fall over backwards but came down and trotted off about 70 yrds uphill and stood. I told him to put another round in him but before he could chamber the next round he walked over the ridge out of sight. He was so excited he wanted to get out of the blind and go get him. I told him to just sit patiently and give him time to expire. It was about 2 hours before the feeder was due to go off for the noon hour. We sat and chatted for 2 1/2 hrs and finally got out of the blind and hiked up the hill and expected to find him lying just over the ridge. No Such Luck! We found a pool of blood about 10" in diameter that looked like lung blood, bright red but not frothy good tracks due to a recent rain so we followed. 2 1/2 hours later and a solid mile we marked the last drop of blood on the trail and decided to come back the next day and pick up where we left off. Six hours of tracking on our hands and knees Sunday and we still haven't found him. How do you kill one of these SOB's in their tracks so you don't have to track them into the next county. He is shooting a .270 win 150 grain Barnes TTSX. I thought that would knock his dick in the dirt but...!

Sorry for such a long post but this is aggravating.

Put one on the neck and shoulder joint....will drop that thing right there....especially with 270 150 grain bullets...with the same bullet, I've seen a stag bull drop and flip over....good luck!

Keep in mind the top 2/3 is all meet and bones (no vitals). You have to hit low and forward to kill those beast.

A hit too high is my guess too. A bullet can pass high through the shoulder blades and clip a dorsal process of one of the thoracic vertebrae and still fail to kill the aoudad (or even a deer, for that matter). The animal will of course react to the shot and bleed some but might not die.

That said, I would continue to look--and look--until you're certain. Look for buzzards circling too. A 30" aoudad trumps a 140 whitetail in my book.

I witness about 60 aoudad (big ones) put down each year. The most effective shot is mid to higher shoulder, yeah the top portion it meat and bones but you need a good bonded bullet to penetrate, that is key! Take out the shoulders and there done.

No ballistic tip, sof points, etc. There hide is thick and there built like line backers. Very rarely have I ever seen a passthru even when behind the shoulder. Due to the thick hide they dont leave a good blood trail either so watch them run and mark them good.

Either that or a quartering a way shot in the pocket does em in pretty good too. They will soak up alot of lead even with well placed shots. If you can get another one in them keep shooting until they fall. A .270 caliber is bare minimum for a big ram, a big ram can easily weigh over 300lbs and is all muscle.

Hope this helps.

shot mine with a 270 win. i shot him low and as far forwars as i could without hitting his outstretched leg. dropped on his front half, pushed himself about 20 yards then stood up and walked off like nothing happened with blood pouring out of his nose and entrance hole. put another round in his shoulder and took off running through the brush, took him about 2 hours to expire.

I have taken several aoudad with my .243 and all have been with a shot directly behind the shoulder just like a whitetail. I have not had one go more than 40yds after they were hit.

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who believe they can and those who believe they can't. They are both correct.

shot my Aoudad behind the shoulder with a 7mm mauser and only went 40 yards also.

150gr TTSX in .270 is too heavy light for caliber is crucial with the TSX needs velocity it likely didn't open. Kacee shot her aoudad with 120gr TSX in mid shoulder drt never flinched complete pass thru from the 7/08

I shot one Sunday with a 22-250. In .55 grain. Right behind the shoulder center of mass. He dropped on the spot and just kicked a little till I put another one in the base of his neck with his back to me.

What ???? Did I do it all wrong ?? Lol

I used a Savage 110e with a very cheap tasco scope that I bought 20 yrs ago for $200 in a pawn shop. And for the cost of a couple sacks of corn on a place I hunt for free. How's that for opening up a can of worms.

Not to encourage hunting aoudad with small calibers. Most people dont shoot well enough to make vital shots. I have used 25-06 with shots in the neck, to a 300 behind a shoulder. Neck shots, well placed drop like a rock. It just depends on the person an gun they are use to shooting. We all know this,

Yes sir. Hell, you should be able to kill one with a .22 long rifle or even a paintball if you hit it in the right spot. Not much difference in a .22 long rifle and .22-250, except for the amount of powder. Same size bullet.

I think I could kill one with a BB gun. Those GAMO's sure do shoot a pellet pretty fast.

If you're shooting a rifle and a good bullet, aim for BONE and vitals. There's no need to be shooting behind the shoulder unless you're bowhunting. Shoot through the shoulder. Front of the shoulder/base of neck area will drop anything. It's not like you're going to ruining any edible meat on an aoudad anyway. LOL

aoudad is some of the best meat you will ever have if done right! you just have to know how to take care of it and prepare it. whats the purpose of shooting an animal like that if you arent going to eat it?
