I was interested in buying a Savage model 112LA(long action) in .308. However, I dont see it on the Savage website.
Anyone have any idea what happened to that model?

Usually, but a long action could be chambered in .308.

I am not familiar with a 112, I have a Model 12 in .308. The short action is the model 12 and is for the smaller calibers. The long action model 112 is for the larger. Well thats what I understand it to mean anyway. Its the same rifle as discussed in the review below I think. I would appreciate it if any of you guys would clarify all of this for me. Thanks "The 12 is the short action, and the 112 handles the longer cartridges such as the .25-06 and .300 Winchester Magnum."http://www.gunblast.com/Savage_12PV.htm

The reason for short actions is too stiffen up everything..same as short bbls...less vibrations..ect...40X 1000yd Rem Target Rifle has short action...DD

It can depend on how old it is, Savage use to only make a long action, that chambered long and short action calibers. The easiest way to find out is to measure center to center of the action screws. If it is 4.40" it is a short action centerfeed, if it is 4.275 it is a short action staggerfeed, if it 5.062" it is a long action staggerfeed.

I think savage discontinued the 112 action a long time ago. They still make the 12 though

What did you find out? I have a 112 in 22-250 so I'm interested in what they said. Savage used to make all their guns in long action when they only had one model, 110. You can still have short action calibers fitted into a long action. Tikka T3 only comes in long action and you can have it f.e. in .223. The only difference will be the bolt face and magazine.

There's not much reason to get a long action .308 unless you want to barrel swap and run long action rounds, too. If that's the case, start with .30-06 or other long action rifle and then change out the bolt face and barrel to go .308 when you have the money and parts together.
If all you want is to shoot a .308, then you do not need or even want a long action.

I used to tend to not pull the bolt back far enough on my long action .223, espeially during rapid follow-ups on moving pigs. I have never had that problem on my short actions though.
