My mom attended a charity event recently and won a brand new Glock Gen 4. She can get it in any caliber they offer and the best part is...she is giving it to me. So my question is... What caliber should I get? I have never carried a sidearm before but I'm interested in something to take to the lease and occasionally to the range. What do ya'll recommend? Also, if you are not good to your mother this is an example of why you should be.

I would say a model 27,23,22 in 40 cal depending on the size of gun you want. Then you can get a conversion barrel in 357 sig or 9mm. You could have three guns in one. IMO

+1 on the 10mm...model 29 or 20. Conversion barrels available for 40, 357, 9x25 for a little more than $100. Heard there is a 9x19 barrel available, but I don't think you can use the original clip. Advantage Arms sells a .22 conversion kit for it as well although it is around $300. Enjoyed the heck out of my G29.

357sig. If you can't get that...357sig.
Drop-in barrels are only about $100 and you can usually shoot a couple calibers without even having to change mags. So the frame size is really more important than the caliber. Get the size frame you want.

40. Plenty of rounds with plenty of punch.
The 23 is a good size. In between the full and the mini. I guess it all depends on what you're going to do with it.

Get a 9mm
Nothing bigger than a .40 if your new as you say you are.
Don't get a .45 or a 10mm or a 357 sig

Depends on use. If you'll be hunting with it, 10mm fo' sure, but good ammo will be expensive.
If it'll be a home/self defense piece, I like the 9mm for cheap practice. Put the bullet where it's supposed to go and caliber choice matters very little.

10 mm you can buy a .40 barrel to shoot cheaper ammo. The 10 will be a better hunting caliber.

I wouldn't get anything smaller than a 40 if you're new to this. A 40 is a great round.

I have a glock 31 357 sig and it fits my hand good and shoots even better. I don't shoot it alot due to cost of ammo but I like diff. calibers than the norm.

I would agree with the .40 cal. Great ballistics and sufficient capacity. Congratulations.

Also, if you are not good to your mother this is an example of why you should be. Since you mention carrying it on the lease and to the range, I'd go full size. If you can get a G35, that would be my top pick. If not, a G22 in 40 cal would be nice. If you want more power than a 40, get a G20 in 10mm.
