Howdy,
Been parusing the forums for a while now and finaly decided to join up. So I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm not what you'd call a seasoned hunter, but as the saying goes, what I lack in experience I make up for with passion. I love wingshooting of all sorts. Just wish we had more upland to hunt here in Texas. One of the reasons I went ahead and signed up was to ask opinions on good outfitters/guides in Kansas. I'll be planning a trip up there here soon. And I notice that there are several threads with KS in the title so perhaps some of you wouldn't mind weighing on your good/bad experiences with companies up there.

I have a 2yr old Vizsla that I am traing right now. He is a fantastic bird dog. However due to a mishap he is gunshy. I am working on that but it is painstaking work. He finds birds great, but I just can't shoot around him right now. So if anyone has advice on that too I'd love to hear it.

Well I shut it for now. Look forward to good conversation.

Welcome. I figured you were a V guy with that username.

The gunshy task will be long and tedious! Good luck!

how do!

run the dog on birds without any pressure or words from you.
happy time for him only. thats a start before you move on.

i like to fire a 22 while the dog is in full chase 50 yards away.
gradually fire it closer to you but whatch his reaction each time

Welcome aboard.
Nice to see some more red dog owners on the forum.

So far this has been the best method. I've actually started as low as a cap gun. But while he is hunting and having fun he hardly notices it. I have hope, but I know it will take time, but it is really hard to wait. I duck hunt a lot and go with guys that have dogs so at least I get to do some shooting, but I really wish my boy was with me.

Thanks for all the welcomes

cap guns or starter pistols are much better than .22's my .02, don't rush, when the dog gets nervous back off and start over, main thing is to keep the dog interested and having fun. you can start around the house with pots and pans and see if he get nervous, if you have friends with REALLY GOOD BROKE dogs work with them,(ask them not to shoot for awhile) even if its just pigeons that you can plant and kick up.

Funny thing, there isn't much that bothers him. Loud noises aren't a problem. I do a lot of woodwork in the garage and he just hangs out with me. Thunder makes him crazy. That actually didn't set in until he was over a year old. Odd thing. Working with other dogs is good advice. Really helps his confidence. I know it will happen eventually, just hate the process.
