I'm lookin to pick up a new rifle in the next week or so. Can't find one I like in 223 there all chamberd in 556. What's the difference between to two rounds I always thought they were the exact same. I would like to shoot 223 just for the better varmint bullets out there. Sorry if thats a stupid question guys thanks for the help

Buy the 5.56 that way you can shoot the 223 in it as well. NEVER shoot a 5.56 in a 223 chamber because the pressures are higher with the 5.56.

223 Rem is ~52,000 psi 5.56 Nato is ~62,000 psi
Otherwise, they are the same. Do not shoot 5.56 in a 223. Most AR's are 5.56 chambered for the hotter ammo.

If you get a 5.56, you can shoot both 5.56 and .223 indiscriminately. If you get .223, you will be severely limiting yourself and cannot shoot 5.56.
