Seriously thinking about picking up a remington 700 sps tactical in 308. I'm impressed by the accuracy out of the 20inch barrel. Anyone have anything bad to say about it. Also scope idea? How are vortex scopes?

Should say I'm using this for anything from target shooting to hunting.

You don't really want to be talked out of it now, do you??

Vortex scopes have a following and a pretty good reputation for the time being. I don't believe they actually manufacture anything themselves, but as long as they don't start cutting corners in their specs and standards and keep standing behind their products I think they'll do well and I'd probably buy one of their scopes if a good deal came my way. But, I predict that they will cut corners and coast on their reputation looking for the fast buck at some point unless they decide to commit to manufacturing their own stuff sometime in the not-too-distant future.

FWIW: Browning is having a tax-free offer starting 11/25 up to 8%.

I can't say anything bad about the SPS Tactical. I don't own one, but I understand they are very good rifles. I can tell you this; if I could start over I would purchase an action, have it trued, and have a custom barrel attached by a competant gunsmith. I purchased a Savage model 10 FLCP-K, in their Law Enforcement/ Military line, and I have no complaints about the rifle. It is a sub MOA rifle, period! But knowing what I know now I could've had an even more accurate rifle by having a custom built. Once you get deep enough into the tight group, long range target quest you keep spending time and money to squeeze the most accuracy out of yourself and your equipment. Might as well start with a solid platform.

I've shot rifles wearing Vortex optics and have felt that they make quality rifle optics. I've never looked through their "low end" line only their top of the line stuff and it was very good. I purchased a, second hand, Super Sniper 5-20 x 50 HD Mil/ Mil and have been extremely happy with it FYI.

-Happy Shooting!

I've always hated Remington triggers, including the x-mark pro, but the rifle does shoot pretty darn well. I don't own one but shot my buddies pretty often. He has the exact one your looking for; 20", heavy, what I call tri-fluted barrel.

Remember that there are 2 SPS tacticals. The regular and the AAC-SD. The Reg has a 1-12twist and the AAC-SD comes with a 1-10 twist. Might not make a difference to you but somthing to consider if you wanna shoot heavier loads.

Ju993rnaut beat me to it. Go with the AAC an get the 1:10 twist not to mention its already threaded for a flash hider/ muzzle break/ suppressor. You can also buy the AAC with the AAC brakeout comp installed(it's a combo flash hider and brake in 1)

This above is what I have now.

I first bought the sps tac and was really impressed with it. I just traded it off for the AAC-SD with the 1:10 twist for the heavier stuff to shoot suppressed. They are good shooters. As was stated above, the only dislike about them are the x mark pro triggers. If it wasnt for that darned set allen screw sticking out of the trigger, I would have ZERO complaints. Both of mine would shoot well under 1/2" at 100 yards with store bought cheap ammo.

I say go for it up

I had one assigned to me for 7 years when I was a sniper on my SWAT team. Very capable of 1/2 MOA at 100y and Sub-MOA out to 400y.

I would not care to lug it around all day on a West Texas spot and stalk hunt. It's definitely not a mountain gun. Shooting from the ground, a bench or box blind would be ideal.

On another note, my department ordered and received 2 of them at the same time. They had consecutive serial numbers. One shot Federal Match Grade (168g BTHP) great. The other didn't like it as well as it liked Winchester Match Grade (168g BTHP). One liked to shoot dirty (30+ rounds before cleaning) and the other was a clean freak (no more than 15 rounds before cleaning).

The point is that you'll probably want to figure out what your rifle likes.

If you pay $400 more than the SPS than you're not looking hard enough.

It is a good rifle. If you start shooting long distance with it you'll quickly learn the limitations of the stock. In that case, upgrade the stock and drive on.

I have two Vortex Razors with no issues. One is dedicated to my one mile rifle. I'm probably going to get a couple more.

I have a SPS Tactical with a Vortex Scope. I immediately put an HS Precisoin stock on it and a timney. Poor Mans Tactical

This gun is by far the most accurate ive ever had. One jagged hole. For the price its hard to beat.

Get the 700 AAC SD.

1:10 twist, barrel is already threaded.

Also ditch the trigger.

Instead of buying the SPS T with the intent to replace the stock and or trigger, I suggest handling a 700 LTR.
20" fluted barrel 1:12 twist, 40x style trigger, H-S precision kevlar/fiberglass stock with full length aluminum bedding block.

May not be the stock you'd chose to replace the sps stock with but it aint bad at all.
The trigger is easy to adjust and IMO can be tuned to be as good if not slightly better than any other factory trigger.
Of course the trigger aint ever gonna be a Jewel but it works.

As far as scopes go, I'm not a Nikon or Vortex fan at all.
Look through as many as possible outdoors, inside a store tells you nothing.
Good time of year to compare scope as it gets dark or close to it before most dealers close, you can see what they're like in low light.
If you have friends that own various makes & models study them in low light.
Above all buy the one that makes you happy, all the recommendations fans and whoop la in the world make no difference.
You're the one that's gotta pay for and look through it and replace it if you don't like it after using it a while.

The 20" 5r's are on the market now too, with the kevlar stock.
