I have a friend with 10 acres. He has asked me to come out and take a couple of deer off his place. Since I have not hunted in the last 2 years due to the economy I have this land free of charge. So my question is, what is the best weapon and caliber for this type of hunt? This is in williamson Co. and not sure about the laws regarding hunting on this small of a place.

My wife hunts our ten acres with a 30-30 lever action with Hornady Leverevolution ammo. No deer but takes care of the hogs.

I wouldn't think the acreage would have anything to do with the size gun you use. What would concern me is the angle of your shots and knowing what is behind where you are shooting if its fairly level ground. My dad retired many years ago and had a 12 acre place on top of a hill in central texas. He and people he had over killed at least 10 deer a year at the bottom of the hill below his house. All the shots went straight into dirt if they missed or passed through the deer with no fear of the bullets carrying on to neighboring land.

I have 18 acres and use a 7mm Rem Mag. But then again I shoot hand loads with reduced charges to achieve the results I want. I also have access to a 5 acre site that has a ton of deer. The lane we shoot on there is 100 yards. Here again - I just use the 7mm Rem Mag.
The main concern I have is what's behind the acreage I shoot on. In the case of my own property, I need to shoot due west and due west only. As such, I'm very hesitant to allow anyone else to hunt the property. The 5 acre tract on the other hand has nothing anywhere near it - so we can pretty much shoot any direction we want.

Thanks guys. I am going to check it out and see whats around the perimeter befor I commit to this favor. I had planned on using a 30-30 or even a shotgun with buck shot if area is close. If it is to close for my comfort I will just do it with a bow.

A bow on 10AC is not a good idea. I would stick with something that will drop them in their tracks. You dont want to be tracking a wounded deer to someones backyard pool. I would get up high in a tripod or tree so you can shoot down into the ground. Then use something like a shotgun with slugs.

Think about this. When you are in a blind, are you really hunting and/or seeing over 10 acres?

10 acres is only 220 yards square? A bow would work but you better only take quality close shots or you may be tracking it to your neighbors property.

Someone may correct me if I am wrong, but I had seen a post a while back where someone had quoted regs as being only bow or shotgun allowed to be shot on at least 10 acres. Rifle or handgun would need a minimum of 50 acres and both with "the reasonable expectation that the projectile would not cross property lines" (my quotes). Something to research and confirm to keep yourself out of unintended trouble.

I just shot my first deer on 12 acres this past weekend. Doe ran maybe 30 yards. It is also a heavily brushed piece of property for the most part. Also poor placed shots would most likely have them leaving the property so go ahead now and get in contact with your neighbors as to recover your animal.

That only applies to property inside city limits, and only in cities with ordinances that prohibit the discharge of firmearms.

Set up fairly close to your feeder...ie..40-75 yds shoot for the kill..ie. high shoulder, or right behind the head to drop 'em. that way no tracking into neighbors
there are alot of opportunities for good hunting on those "sleeper" small tracts of land!!
