Where is the most isolated place in Texas to hunt? I have seen places west of Big Bend for a little of money where no one would go. Where would you go to get lost?

Not the most isolated but very few people lived there at the time I did. I lived 35 miles down this road. Closest town was Cotulla. No mail delivery either. Closest neighbor was over 9 miles from me.

I think the McDonald observatory is one of the darkest place in North America. It is just outside Ft. Davis. Very isolated out that way.

STX, did any of your neighbors carry chainsaws or wear masks? Nope, but when they smiled they spelled Exxon with what teeth they had left. I always told guys who came out the first time to the ranch to make sure that had enough gas to get back to town. Then when they would get there they would say- "crap I ain't got enough gas to get back to town".

If you want wide open area, but don't want to be terribly far from society, get up towards the panhandle.

I used to hunt the March Ranch out of San Angelo. At the time it was 117 sections, and over 30 miles from the main house back to town. Some of the pastures on that ranch were larger than many ranches. As far as one could see in any direction was March Ranch.
It was a huge, wild, desolate place and I loved it.

That guy still have the fence made out of Ocotillo in either Candelaria or Ruidosa up there? That is a pretty cool area. Redford is kinda meh, but the road from there to Study Butte is awesome as long as there isn't a burro around the bend in the middle of the road.
There are some pretty isolated stretches almost anywhere west of 277 all the way to El Paso.

I hunted a mountain range south of Sierra Blanca one time years ago. The only way up was on foot with a 10' to 20' ledge rock right at the top. Sitting up there looking toward Mexico I felt like I was the only human for a hundred miles. That's one of the few places in Texas where water runs uphill.

Hunting is easy..it's getting permission from your wife that is tough.

My house in S. Brewster county was 20 miles from pavement and 40 miles from the nearest store. my closest year round neighbor was 5 miles. As far as isolated hunting goes black gap has got to be high on the list for most isolated. It borders Mexico to the East, The most remote part of Big Bend NP to the South and West and big ranches to the North. The closest thing to civilization is the Stillwell Store 19 miles up the road. When your in Black gap you can be very much alone. If you can get access Southern Presidio County has got some pretty hard to reach and amazing country, particularly down around Casa Piedra, and West of Pinto Canyon. The Pinto Canyon Road is one of my favorite drives.

Add the Valentine area to the list of isolated western sites.
I go to catfish at Black Gap very often, but hunting is restricted. To get a deer hunt, I think you have to enter a drawing. I know there is no way you will be able to hunt deer otherwise.
Javelina, dove, and quail hunting is allowed.
Be certain not to shoot a bear, wolf, or desert bighorn. They would want huge amounts of money and prison time.
Also, game is scarce even in the best of times, and the drought has hit all wildlife hard out here. Mighty beautiful country though.

My ranch is so far out in the country that my nearest neighbor is a long distance phone call and is in a different area code. Actually we are also in different time zones but that is a whole 'nother story. :-)

Two GPS stories. North of Colorado City, Texas, following a GPS to get back to town. TomTom took me to the middle of a wind farm and announced I was there. Kinda cool sitting in the middle of all them giant wind turbines.
Another time in Wood County between Yantis and Land's End, GPS announced "No Route Possible." Good thing I had backup directions - when TomTom just gives up you're in pretty deep.

I would not hunt there, unless I had a squad of SWAT with me. It is a "coyote" country. The Mexican kind, bringing the fresh work forces. Friend's brother was killed on his own ranch by Marfa years back. Now it is worse.
