Ok, after years of being a Rage lover, I am switching to Montecs. I still love Rage but I am really starting to doubt their penetration. I just got back from Pike County and my best friend hammered a 160" droptine buck. The landowner has told us that he has used about every single broadhead there is on the market and Rage is great at making entry wounds but fails in penetration and pass through. This guy kills 50-60 deer a year. He is wealthy and hunts numberous states plus there isnt much of a limit on deer in his home state of Maryland. He said that the Montecs are by far the best and most consistent broadhead there is. he told us that Jake would have never recovered his deer if he had went with a Rage that day. he hit him in the shoulder joint and had a complete pass through on a deer that feild dressed nearly 300lbs. Just my opinion now and I will be switching.

BTW, I did stick a doe that dressed 200lbs with a montec while I was there and had a pass through and she made it all of 20yds before she was done! I will try to get pics up of the deer.

I have 100% complete pass through rate with rage 2 blade. Montecs are awesome as well. I like that you can sharpen them on a diamond by just rubbing around, as the angles are set that way. Good luck with the switch.

I have shot both and both have been pass throughs. I decided to use montecs this year, and the buck I shot at 20 yards went all the way through and stuck perfectly in the mud. I also like the easy re-sharpening of the montec( like HardWired said) which is unlike the Rage which you have to buy replacement blades and o-rings. I still have two rages left and I think I'll shoot hogs with them, but as for deer I'll be shooting Montecs.

I guess you have not seen any of my posts regarding rage and penetration. I do have several rages and finally got to waste one on a hog to other day, didn't get no pass through of course but it did do the job. The hog ran about 40 yards a killed over, at least it did it's job this time. The Montec's are some good broadheads, the grandson has been using them and has several kills with them.

Ive used Rage for a long time now and I have never had issues. My TX buck this year was shot perfectly in the shoulder bone and I only got about 5 inches of penetration but he didnt make it out of sight before piling up so I wasnt too concerned. I do hunt Texas a lot(and love hunting Texas) but my passion is to be 25' up in a Pin Oak in the MidWest chasing those whitetails and if I make a mistake and bust a big buck in the shoulder joint with a Rage he will not die and that is the main reason for my switch. I still have 6 brand new Rages that I may sale or I may waste on pigs and does and after that I will exclusively shoot Montecs.

Perfect example....
If you watch any Drury Outdoor show...They are sponsored by Rage and use them. Where do they shoot their deer? Far back, almost the back of the ribs. They get pass throughs and good blood but they also wait 12-18 hours before going in to look for the deer. Im not perfect and I make mistakes but I prefer to make an ethical shot and kill the deer within a few minuutes.

Just got back from Kansas and had a giant 160"+ whitetail run a doe past me and get shot on the joining property. The guy shot him in the shoulder with a rage and he never found the buck. It makes me sick to know that a buck like that will never be found.

I've tried Rage, killed the doe, but the broadhead was trashed. Got some Grim Reapers, and they are superior in my opinion. I also did the 55 gallon steel barrel test, and the melon test. The rage barely made it through one side of the barrel. The grim reaper tore through both sides. When I shot the melon, one blade opened on the rage 2 blade, and all 3 opened on the grim reaper.

Also shot the barrel with the rage 3 blade. The tip was the only part that penetrated the first wall of the steel barrel. I'm shooting a Diamond Marquis at 70lbs, Easton Epic 400's.

Proof enough for me. I'll stick to Grim Reapers if I feel like shooting mechanicals, and I love Magnus Stinger Buzzcut and Slick Trick for fixed blade.

I sold all my rage!! I have no experience with the montecs at all so I can't comment on them, but I use the 100gr slick trick mags and the standard slick tricks and I Love them, those all the only broadheads in my box!!!! I think a lot of people overlook them, I do not know why maybe they don't really have all the advertising that G5 does or rage or a bunch of the other companies do but they are a great broadhead!! Another broadhead that everybody at the pro shop has been raving about(customers and staff) is the Hartcraft XChange Trophy I and II, they aren't in the big name stores and I am sure only a limited number of proshops, but it is called the XCHANGE because it is ONE FERRULE BODY WITH FIVE BLADE OPTIONS.Now the Trophy 1 is what everyone has been buying or the entire kit!! Heard nothing but great things about them. I will probably try them sometime before next season

Do y'all not have issues with fixed broadheads shooting inconsistently?

I have one arrow with a Rage and usually three or four with a Montec in my quiver. I just can't bring myself to knock the Rage. I have it in the quiver for 40+ yard shots, but heck the Montecs fly great at 40 yards so I have had the same arrow with a Rage on it in my quiver for two years now.

The Montecs are great - I just can't find a reason not to use them for all shot distances and game - hog or deer.

If you are more than likely your bow needs to be tuned!!! I have perfect flight, and hit with my field points!!

If your bow is tuned properly it should shoot any broadhead like a fieldtip. Problem is your bow should shoot a broadhead like your broadhead because after all no one is hunting with fieldtips if that makes sense.

I have ok success with Rage but the thing that gets me is that my wife shot a doe at 15 yards right behind the shoulder and the doe runs around 100 yards with minimal blood trail..... till we loose the blood...the shot could not have been better in my opinion but makes me question the "Rage" style going on....im thinking about switching to montecs...

My vote goes to the grim reapers. Field point accuracy at any distance, massive entry and exit wounds and great penatration. I shot a doe a few weeks ago at 64 yds (was walking to my bow blind and she was already at feeder). Complete pass through, destroyed both lungs.....and my game camera directly behind her!! bang She went 20 yds blowing blood out both sides and crashed

I used to shoot montecs... Academy was out, so I picked up a pack of Muzzy Phantoms... I am a big fan now. Great penetration, pass through everytime... One issue, so thin, hit a bone, and your bent.....

Love my rages. I tried the T3 and did not like it at all. I shot 2 deer with it this year and was unimpressed with the results.

Rage 2 blade exit. I've shot 2 deer with the rage 2 blades and both were pass through. I'am always open to try different broadheads, but will continue to use the rage 2 blade until I have an issue with them. The doe I shot was quartering away and it blew out her whole front shoulder on exit.

I have had no issue with the rage 3 blade. The doe I shot this year had complete pass through , and went through the opposite shoulder. She ran maybe 50 yds and piled up.

Another reason I use the 220 grain Muzzy Phantoms, they will break bones and pass thru the animal!

BTW there are a lot of places where the land owners will not allow Mechanicals.
