I do not think that there is a perfect caliber. But there is a perfect one for me or you and it is all in preference.

You must have been born an octopus with 8 arms to handle all 7(8) of those at one time. But I know which one is your go to gun in that group.

Theres a reason snipers use it. 100 years of ballistics. Can hunt any animal in north america with it. Terminal ballistics are incredible. .308 is the way to go

It hasn't been around but since the 50's. Modern powder made .308 possible. You couldn't get enough of that old prill into the small case to do what was needed. What was needed? Good question. The purpose behind .308 was to mimic .30-06 ballistics so the military could switch over to it witout having to re-train everybody. So, in the sense of ballistics, it has been around as long as the military had a love interest in the .30-06. It would be fair to ask why the military wanted to change over. The main reason was the shorter case. That meant less material used per round, which meant less weight per round, which meant it was easuer to ship in bulk and soldiers could carry more. Another valuable feature of the shorter case was that new machine gun designs would get a higher cyclic rate because the bolt doesn't have to travel as far to cycle.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

.308 perfect for hunting anything? I think if one could be perfect, or close to it, the .308 is in the list. I shoot one lots throughout a year in practice, competition, and hunting.
But I wouldn't shy away from a .243 either. When the day comes that I need to rebarrel my rifle. I am considering going with a .243. I don't currently employ one but have some buds that are firm believers in the .243.

.308 was introduced in 1952 but was the spawn of the .300 savage that was introduced in 1920 and the balistics devired from such. So yes semantically I should have said 60 years on 308 and 91 years of balistics for those caught in the semantics of it all. Nonetheless the perfect storm of a cartridge for hunting
