I think molting has to do with birds. Maybe a bad case of road rash.

IMO Deer looks like it is loosing its summer hair and putting on its winter coat. Deer also does not look all that healthy either so that is why it may be behind in its schedule.

stxranchman - that's what I thought (called molting) but I've never seen this before - when do they usually do this? Also, a lot of our deer here look poor this year and then some are okay - drought effects, but no other deer look like this.

Usually they shed summer coat going into fall about 3 days before they shed their velvet. Drought could be the reason also. Could also be internal parasites in a bad year also.

I have never seen this before....I would sure like to know what it is though. He doesn't look healthy I'm leaning towards parasites, disease, or maybe really bad nutrition which could be a result of parasites...If you can find out for sure, please post and let us know what you find out.

I'd say contact TX Parks and Wildlife and/or a Game Warden they may want to take the deer to check or remove it from the population to be safe...
call em and ask them if you can email them the pics and get their expert assistance...
Good luck

This type of hair loss could also result from fever.
