I had a big tom come out Sat. afternoon and sit 75 yards from my stand for 20-25 minutes. He took a bath and then sat down on his rear and stared into the woods and finally walked off. I didn't want to shoot him with my 308 so I let him go. I have several 223's but since this was less than 100 yards from my feeder, I'd rather keep the gunfire noise to a min. What about the ole Ruger 10/22? 70-80 yard shot? Behind the shoulder or neck?

I guess it all depends on WHY you want to shoot it. For a mount, I'd use the 22.

Shoot a balistic tip .223 and hit him directly in the shoulder or straight on in the neck! I shoot my fair share of bobcats and have two really pretty bobcats mounted that I shot within 100 yards directly in the shoulder with a winchester balistic tip and had very very minimal fur damage. The .22 would work no doubt, but I would prefer the .223 because the chances of that animal getting away are minimized!

Shoot em with TSX and no issue I shot one with 300 win. Ballistic tip is bad advice it will pop and do more damage than necessary less expansion less damage most likely

ya ballistic tips tend to explode on the varmints... the v-max i use usually blows a good hole in em. if your worried about big holes use fmj round or something... i shot a cat with a 270 using remington 150 grain core lokts and there was maybe a nickel to quarter sized hole.

I've shot three coyotes and then turned to shoot an 8 point buck that came out near the feeder to check what was going on. I have also hade 3-4 deer laying on the ground numerous times. I think you should be fine shooting with whatever rifle you have with you at the time.

Ive seen cats run a long ways even after taking major damage. Will a 22lr kill one...sure it will. Id say the odds of it dropping in its tracks are slim. Nothing is worse than hitting a nice bobcat and watching it run off. Go with the .223

Most pelts can be repaired even when shot with with large caliber rifles, even though the damage may look like there's only half an animal there, just depends on what part of the anatomy the damage is in. Doesn't hurt to take it to a taxi, let him evaluate it and help you. I would rather take in an animal like that than one that's been shotgunned, so much so that I have refused animals that have been shot with a shotgun.

This is just a rule of thumb but in most cases if they sit down and give you a full on front chest shot... That's one I would take I have hunted with a 22-250 and a 243 for years and even with ballistic tip ammo never had a front chest shot exit and damage is slim to none. I got a bunch shot on video this way and we have a few in the freezer to mount that were taken with bigger Cal. Then a 223 and their in great shape. Best thing to do would have been to take the great opportunity he gave you to kill him 308 or not ... You may see him again you may not.... Good luck I hope you get him and if you do post some pics. This is just my 2 cents but it works for us every year on plenty of bobcats. Good hunting Skinner

Guess I should have dropped him while I had the chance. Maybe he'll show up again while I'm in the stand, maybe not. I'd also like to see if I can call him in. I've never tried calling, but it looks exciting. Thanks fellas!!!

Spine was actualy hanging out of the baseball size hole it made in its back. I Have to imagine a .308 would do the same or worse.

Allot of it depends on bullet choice and what grain that and a little luck... we have had good luck using the 50-75 grain bullets. My hunting partner Tj Shockler shoots regular old Rem soft points in 55 grain out of his Sendero 22-250 and hasn't messed up a cat yet with them and no runners either. I shoot 58 grain vmax or handloads out of my 243 and have had decent luck with them as well now on fox that's a diffrent story I pull out the old 222 for them little suckers. Take care Skinner

Just some food for thought. I recently shot a doe with my 22-250 with a 50grain hornady superperformance varmint and even that had a pretty insanely large exit--I don't have pictures but I'd be willing to bet 2-3x3". Not sure if I want to do that to a kitty I plan on mounting.

I shot a yote the other day with a 62 gr tsx out of my 22-250ai and left about a quarter size exit. The tsx would probably just punch right through with minimal damage.

I shot one last season with a 30 30 at about 25 yards in the shoulder, the taxi mended him up well and I am the only one who can tell where the synthetic fur is at on the mount.

I shoot a .22-250 with Remington Premier Accu-tip Boattails, 50gr. Dropped every thing i have ever shot with it right in its tracks(deer, yotes, cats, fox, ect.) with no exit wound.
