My new 700 is not extracting rounds properly, and so after I got today from hunting I took a close look at it and all I see as an extractor is a gouge of metal! Has Remington really cheapened their extractor on the 700 to this extent? By gouge, I mean it looks like a machine pressed the inside edge of the bolt face to produce an indentation and corresponding burr. It is just this burr that is extracting (sometimes) the shell.

Could you get pics? might help to see what your describing. The extractor is easy to replace, and there are vids out there showing how.

I'll try. My point is, there doesn't seem to be an extractor "part". Just a burr that serves, sort of, as an extractor. I take it from your comment this isn't normal?

The Remington 700 originally used an extractor rived to the bolt, but now use a rivetless extractor in the same groove. Looks like: What exactly is it doing or not doing?

It didn't extract the very first round I fired in it. I had to get it out with a cleaning rod. Since then, about every 5th round it won't extract, but I can usually get it out by reseating the bolt and trying again. I don't consider this acceptable.
I don't think I could take an acceptable photo of the extractor. Even looking at it with a jeweler's loupe I have trouble making it out.

remington is lacking in the quality it used to have. It is the best factory action available, but its not what it was 30 yrs ago. The only way I'll go remmy is and old one, for new guns ill stick to savage.

The Remington extractor is designed to pop into the extractor groove in the case, so single-feeding should work as well as feeding up from the magazine.
Postoak, what you describe is not acceptable. If the rifle is within warranty (2 years), contact:

Thanks, but how does Sports World get involved? Don't I have to send this back to Remington? Or does a local gunsmith somehow get involved?

This morning I took another look at the extractor and can see it does project inward toward the cartridge somewhat, but very little. I can see why it is giving inconsistent extraction. I can also see what looks like a pin at one end of the extractor, ground flush with the bolt on both the inside and the outside.

That is a riveted extractor and would be out of warranty.
If you'd like, PM us for details on repair.

I own and have owned numerous 700 Remingtons. I also handload & usually shoot as much in a month as some do in a life time. I have never had a stuck case in a Remington as yet. But every mfg has that one or two weapons that are problems. I got a Browning Stainless Stalker several yrs. ago in 300 Win...couldn't make it shoot. Clean the bore, and it would pull string out of the patch. It put pressure wrinkes on my Burris 6x24 scope from the recoil. I worked on it (stupidly)for two yrs, put a break on it, got it to group in a quarter,,,,,then got rid of it ....I don't feed if they are over an 1" at a 100yds. You may just have one of them.

I had the same issue with a 700 I had changed the extractor and it solved my problems, it was a simple fix too I think it only took a few minutes.

Here's what your extractor should look like. I need to clean that bolt face up, don't I?

It does look more-or-less like that but on the outside of the bolt around where one end of the extractor is, there's what looks like a pin. At least, some kind of mark on both the inside and the outside of the bolt:

Having only one Remington 700 in the safe at this time, I can only compare your photo to mine and all I can say is mine does not look like that. I do not recall my previous 700 bolt looking like that either. Maybe it's time to call Remington. Better yet, email them and attach the photo.
The older 700s had riveted extractors, but I have heard nothing about them going back to that design. Also, in the photo the outside edge of the bolt appears to be peened somewhat, directly above what appears to possibly be a rivet or pin. Maybe it's just the lighting, but it just doesn't look right to me.

Sorry to hear about that but I have seen 2 brand new 700's do exactly what your talking about.
Both had to be sent back to remington
