i wouldnt put the m223 on a 308. the ballistics are a LOT diferent, and the m223 is calibrated for the 223/556 round.

Look for a scope where the reticle and turrets are either mil/mil or moa/moa. Otherwise its a headache. Lot of good manufacters; vortex, nikon, leupold, burris, all within reasonable price range. And if youre serious about this rifle and shooting distances, I would look at other stocks besides the axiom, and unless you really just cant stand recoil there is really no reason for a brake on it. There is not much recoil to a .308 as it is.

Honestly, i would just buy a rem 700 5r milspec and put quality glass on it. Leupold vxIII in a 4.5x14 x40 will be plenty to hunt at ethical distance. you can get into that gun/scope combo for ~1600 bucks, and it will shoot .5 all day long.

Thats what I did Jim. I topped mine with a Viper PST, dropped in a Jewell, and smoothed out the existing bedding in the h&s with some glass bedding. Also lapped the scope rings. Ive got a bit more in mine than 1600 but as long as I do my job, it will shoot .25 moa consistently with factory ammo. Shooting fed. 165gr tsx. I am dying to see what it will do with handloads

Load up some 175 smk's over 42 gr of varget at 2.80 oal. i get .25 to .33 with no prob. my scope isnt high dollar either. nikon buckmaster 4.5x14 mildot reticle. that 11.25 twist is made for the 173 gr m118 lr rounds, and the 175's are as close as you can get to them...

I shot at 750 with that combo. with the limited scope travel, and 0 moa bases, i was having to hold over to get hits. at 500, it was a 3 inch load, and not a really hot one. after 11 or 12 loads, the brass was showing no signs of stress. was using winchester brass and cci primers.

Its the gun, lol. Best shooting rifle i ever pulled the trigger on. i see you got a jewell in yours too. mine is as light as i can get it, without dropping the hammer when i slam the bolt down, about 6 or 8 ounces. GREAT improvement over the x-mark that was in it.

You are correct, by far the single biggest difference maker in accuracy. Mine is at 2lbs, I'm scared to go lighter with a rifle I hunt with, especially with gloves on my hands.

For the Money you cannot go wrong with MILLETT or SWFA's Super Snipers, I have both on my 308's and they are tack drivers....I am also a big fan of the 700 SPS and 110 Model SAVAGES. My 1,000 yd gun is a SAVAGE FP LE with a SA 4-14x56 Govt Issue Scope. If you do anything....the Triggers are a must. I am a HUGE FAN of RIFLE BASICS, just order the pull you want, it comes in, drop it in and Bingo. Their Customer service is awesome too, and they are less expensive than most. Lastly, a Sporter or Fluted Bull is the only way to go for long range accuracy.

SPS Tactical, put a real stock on it, not an axiom. Drop in a Timney and you have a fine shooting rifle for 1000 or get a 5r and have little longer rifle that shoots superb and add a scope.

Many scopes to be had, the scope you listed would not be it.

I purc. the SPS 26in bbl L/H when they first came out....put my
stock off my BDL 22-250 on it and a 312 XTR Burris Tactical Scope
Ill. w/mill dots...Shoot 130 BarnesX Triple Shocks..chron 3123FPS
about 3/4in grp...Shoot all well...doesnt need a break....I also
shoot 110gr Sierra HP and 165gr Spreer BT...all under 1 in.

I did change my mounts to Weaver Type Tact. due to scope loosening bases, screws, ect. on this rifle and a Wthby..

A good friend of mine, and my "go to gun guy" builds these rifles for fun. Remington 700 action, most have a Sako extractor modification done. When he first built one, the Remington extractor wouldn't consistently remove the cartridge and he said he uses the Sako extractor because it never misses a lick. He buys a blank barrel, generally a fluted bull barrel, and cuts the threads on each end, and adds a muzzle brake on the business end. Of course he adds a trigger, mostly Jewell's and some Timney. I'm not sure of the manufacturer of the stock, but he calls it a Straight line stock. He glass beds it, and puts it all together with quality optics. US Optics, Leupold, S&B, etc. He spends over 50 solid hours on each rifle, and it normally takes him a month to build one. I just gave a brief run through, there is a lot more that goes into one of these than what I listed. Personally, I've shot with him from 660 yards, 750 yards, and 1100 yards. I can't shoot precision groups from 1100 yards, but I can ring steel. I'm better from 660 and 750, but I still need a lot of practice. They are really awesome guns, and a lot of fun to shoot and even more fun to watch him build. As far as what goes into these $$ wise, all I can really say is they aren't cheap.

Here is a picture of one of his first builds.
