How has the hunting been in Sutton County this year? We normally see a lot of deer but opening weekend was weak this year.

I spent opening weekend on our lease north of Sonora. We saw more bucks at the feeders than we saw doe, which is not really uncommon at this time of year for our place. We had several young bucks sighted that were pretty nice also. Overall, I would have to say that deer sightings/movement was about normal. One thing that we did notice was that the younger bucks were not in as good a shape as the mature bucks.

BTW: Out of 11 hunters, we only took one doe opening weekend.

I hunt on a lease 20 miles east of Sonora. Opening weekend I took this Buck. This past weekend I saw some smaller bucks but no shooters. I saw very few mature does. The older mature bucks are in good shape on our lease. The younger bucks and does seem to be under weight. This past weekend we also noticed several bucks starting to chase does.

Nice deer! I've seen pretty much the same thing this year. Bucks look healthy and the doe's look pretty poor. Im headed to the lease in Crockett County sat night so hopefully the big boys will start moving and chasing doe's by then.

I hunt just West of Sonora and I have been seeing about the same as everybody else. I have noticed that the antlers are WAY down this year. I have seen several bucks that I recognize from last year and their antlers have declined quite a bit. I have been running cameras since August and do not have a picture of 1 deer that I would shoot. It's a bad season for antlers!

Our property normally has 15-20 deer at any given time at each of our 6 stands but this year was unbelievably bad - on several occasions we were shut out of seeing one deer.

What was weird is the month before opening season - there seemed to be a lot more deer because we believed a fire close by had driven them to our property.

We fed year round as usual - and we had a constand fed water trough but very few deer. Certainly nothing worth shooting.
