I'm 60, retired Air Force, working for airlines in DFW area.
I just bought my first firearm, a SW .38, 4" barrel revolver.
I'm a fishing guy, and I've been on the fishing forum forever, and peeking on here for a while. I've never 'owned a gun, so this is all new to me, so forgive my ignorance.
I felt it was time to have something in the house that would, if nothing else make me sleep better. So here's a few questions.
I live in North Richland Hills, where's the closest gun range ?
Where's the best place to get a CHL ?
Thanks, jim

Welcome Jim! If you google CHL instructors in your city, you will find many to choose from, or close by. I'm on the East side of town, so I can't help you with the gun ranges.

Just a tip, if you do get your CHL see if you can borrow a semi-auto or go buy one beforehand. If the rules are the same still, you can qualify with a semi-auto and legally carry a semi-auto or revolver. If you qualify with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver. I think that's how it went.

One of the instructors here is Ray Allen, who was a member of the state legislature that wrote the CHL law.

As for a great place to shoot...that's a tough question for the DFW area. I've shot at Quail Creek and found it to be lass than satisfying. I've joined a private club, but that's not really a practical solution for a guy who wants to shoot his revolver several times a year. If you think you might become more interested, buy more guns, and shoot regularly then a private club becomes a more attractive proposition.

I think there are plans for a range in Roanoke, but I have heard very little about it for several years and am not sure if it's actually going to happen.

X2 If you go with Academy for Firearms Training over in GP they supply the gun and ammo.

Cabelas has never had a range.

BP does.

Didn't even know about this place, and I have to drive right past it to get to Cabela's. Looks good on their website. I think it would definitely be worth a try if you don't object to shooting indoors. To me it's all about sound deadening and lighting plus the staff...call it "atmospherics." I might even give it a try when the weather gets to be intolerable.

That range by Cabellas is very expensive. I renewed my last CHL with a class taught by a Fort Worth police officer, Sgt.Keith McGuire, his website is www.safeshot.com. One of the best classes I have taken. They did their shooting at the Alpine gun range south of Fort Worth.
