Any new tricks beside soap and water on new barrel? This is a scoped model just want to get it ready for the bore butter with out a big mess. This is my first time with muzzleloader so any advice appreciated.

I'll keep saying it, if you shoot an inline with 209 primers, you need to try Blackhorn 209. It does not attract moisture, IS NOT water soluble and you clean with Hoppe's #9 or WD 40. A lot less messy. Would you pour water down one of your modern smokeless rifles? Plus, BH 209 has 15% more energy and less smoke than black powder or substitutes. Pellets are moisture magnets and can lose energy, crumble, and have ignition problems in the Texas humidity. Check out Blackhorn 209 on the web! Just be sure and use a "hot" 209 primer, not the special muzzleloader primers (they are mild-for regular BP) Good Huntin'

I agree with Bannon, Blackhorn 209 is the way to go....

Many of those who have come before you have asked the same question about what is the best solution for cleaning a muzzleloader, in-line or traditional. And I have to tell you that you will get as many different answers as there are people who own muzzleloaders. I have been hunting, shooting, collecting and writing about muzzleloaders for over 30 years now and have tried most of the manufactured as well as the home brewed cleaning solutions. The best advice I can give you is to try out the different methods until you find the one that works the best for you. The soap and water method works just fine, however, be sure to run a patch soaked in alcohol thru the bore to dissipate the water left behind in the cleaning process. Another thing to keep in mind is that each rifle, even those in the same batch from the same manufacturer are different. One might shoot best with Triple 7, another might shoot best with real back powder and another might like one of the other black powder replacements. The same thing goes when trying cleaning methods. I have some that respond the best to the soap and water method. Some that like Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner. some that like Shooter's Choice. The best thing to do is to experiment, experiment and experiment until you find what works best for you. After all that is one of the things that makes muzzleloading so much fun, the experimenting with the goal in mind of improving on what we are doing.

TEXAN pretty much says it all! I've shot many a bullet trying to find the right combos for the three that I own, and oddly, they each have their own "character"!

Couple more things about BH 209. No "crud rings" around the breech plug. Some powder subs are notorious for this. Also, how often do you read about "running a wet patch after every shot or 2" or cleaning after every 3rd shot. I don't know how many shots you can put through a rifle shooting BH 209 without cleaning the bore but I know I've shot mine over 20 times and could have shot more.Yes, it cost a little more than other powder but you get what you pay for! The cleanest burning, highest energy, no water cleanup, most accurate powder you can get for inlines. No, I ain't a writer or reviewer and I don't own stock in BH 209, wish I did! I'm just an old hunter that studied a lot before I got in the inline game. Good luck and good huntin', which ever way you decide to go.

Bannon on your loads you say 110 grs BH 209. There load data only goes to 84 grs by weight. Do you mean 110 by volumetric units?
