Say you shoot a nice buck, but you are kind of waffling on whether or not to mount it, or you can't afford it immediately.
What's the best way to preserve it for a while? Can you throw it in the freezer?

Best way is to bag it in a plastic bag. Squeeze as much air out of it as possible and rebag into a couple more. Then put in the freezer. Can stay there safely for a year or longer if bagged correctly. Try to wrap the cape around the face before bagging. If at all possible and you know how, cape the deer(remove the hide from the face)prior to freezing. In that case you would roll the hide hair out up and bag it as described above.

Evelyn and MIke nailed it. The only other thing Ive suggested is to soak an old dish rag and wrap it around the nose/eyes. If the trash bag has any holes in it, they will dehydrated those areas over time. Ears will do the same thing so if your going to leave it in the freezer a long time, wrap the ears in wet towel, band place a ziplock over each one. Secure it with a rubber band then bag the whole thing.

BMD that is the best way I agree but most hunters do not know how to do that correctly and end up doing more harm then good.
