I spent the weekend with my 9 and 10 yr old boys hunting the special youth only season. My boys have been with me hunting since they got out of diapers. My 10 yr old matured quickly and was able to use a rifle a couple of years ago as has already taken a couple of deer.

My 9 year old has made it to the point were he is ready this year to take his first deer. We did not see a deer Saturday morning or evening at the feeder, and he was really getting anxious to shoot. On Sunday morning we had a good 2.5 yr old long horned spike under the feeder. We my boy spend several minutes trying to get steady on this deer, he kept telling me I'm shaking to bad, I cant keep it still. I had him bring the gun down, and had him take some deep breaths and relax.

He then took aim on the deer again, with the same problem. He could not keep from shaking, I told him it was Buck Fever and everyone gets them once in a while. Just then a shot from the lease next to us send the deer running and the hunt was over.

I told him how proud I was of him that he did not rush the shot, and chose to not shoot when he knew he did not have a good shot. I'm just as happy to brag about this as I would be had he taken his first deer.

Great job, I think way too many people stick a little kid out there just so they can get one and be proud of their 5 year old. Im glad others out there still have the forethought to know that its not always a good idea up

Sounds like your doing a great job bringing up the next generateion of responsible hunters.

There will be a next time, that's why they call it hunting instead of killing.Better to not make the shot if he's unsure. If y'all are hunting Kendall cty he'll have more opportunities. up
