How come we all hear how much damage hogs are creating and we do not hear (other then Rick here on forum) form farmers to help em out? With hogs ability to multiply so fast you would figure there sure is plenty to hunt.

There are plenty. Most people look at them as a way to make a dollar so they charge for hunts. Some land owners have also had bad experiances letting people come out and hunt or have heard horror stories about it. That is also a reason why they don't do that

Greetings,
Around here, it's the good ole boy network.
The farmers and ranchers know locals who have hunted all their lives, respect the owners and their land, demonstrate responsibility, who they can trust to follow thru on these things, clean up the mess and quite a few are hungry and eat everything they shoot so the land owners don't bother with others.

It only takes one idiot who accidentally shot cows, dogs, deer, posted signs and everything BUT pigs, left their beer cans behind (usually full of bullet holes) and the land owners learned and told all their friends.

Don't take that wrong as I am guessing you are probably not one of those guys but the farmers and ranchers don't know that.

Cheers,

Vern hit it exactly on the head....it's all about who ya know anymore you must also be respectful of the landowner and their land, even offer to help out around the place from time to time.

I met a guy at work who had land 40 min outside of houston and he was a "new" landowner, so he let us in. We were careful to make sure we got invited back again. Total luck, without that break, would likely be paying for the hunt

There you go.
Luck and timing.

When I mention I have 150 acres with hogs running wild, everybody within earshot wants to come take care of the problem for me....
Between myself, my two sons, a daughter-in-law and her father, we have plenty of pig poppin' fun and feed lots of hungry folks.

you'll find that landowners get funny. We allow very few people onto our place that we don't know very well. The less "outsiders" know about what you have the better off you are.

Also, things start to get strange when you invite folks to hunt - even those you know. You invite someone to hunt, and a few days beforehand you get a call saying the in-laws will be in town and the father-in-law sure would like to hunt. Or the brother-in-law sure would like to go hunting. etc, etc. You end up giving in, making plans, etc.

Living on the family farm I can tell you that invites are far and few between. Reason lots of family, 1/2 open, 1/2 woods, and hogs don't live here they pass through. As far as farmers I have had cows and dogs shot by so called hunters. Crop farmers are pickey about who is in thier fields because some people trample the crops and do as much damage as the hogs. Just a hint if you do make a contact to hunt on thier property treat it as they wish and respect it. Take your trash and any other mess with you when you go.

Like everyone said...its all about luck, and being respectfull...most farmers are gona already have someone taking care of there problem that they know and trust to run around there property...growing up in a small town i knew alot of landowners and usually gain a track of land to hunt every year...and usually they will want someone whos local and can be there all the time instead of someone just coming every now and then to hang out and hunt...

If you can be lucky enogh to know someone or meet a new farmer to the area than be respectfull and you may hav a chance..but most arnt gona take the time to come to you....when they got the locals knockin at there door...IMO

We're city slickers. The only probelems we've ever had on our land were a couple of local boys.

central TX boys. Welcome on the property until they tried to kill themselves in our ranch truck by driving full speed across the pasture one weekend when we weren't there and they weren't supposed to be there. The wash out they hit was about 2 feet deep.

I only have about 200 acres. Neighbors aren't all that far away and the pigs are nocturnal. So, they would have to be hunted at night. I don't want night shots that would awaken the neighbors.

Next problem. I don't live there but have a mobile home, tractors, equipment, etc. My house is not near the road so It is secluded. I really don't want anybody to know that I have all that stuff and am seldom around.

Being we have a family ranch I understand where the landowner comes from on not letting just anyone hunt there. On the other hand, being a hunter I totally agree with the hunters who don't want to pay for helping to remove nuisance animals. In case anyone is interested I have a suppressor, ND3 x50, my coyote and hog removal services are free and I do travel !!! :-D
