just wondering if you had some domestic turkeys and released them in the wild if they would survive and if they would populate with the wild turkeys

First off, and I am not jumping on you about this, so don't take it that way, TP&W would hang a person from a tall oak tree if they were caught doing that.
Second, it has been tried before, and it does not work, in fact all it does is pollute the wild flock with inferior genetics.
Third, wild turkeys are dumb, domestic turkeys are stupid.
People have tried it many times over the past 100 years or more and it has never accomplished anything.
Also there are probably one and a half million wild turkeys in Texas alone, and all they require is a little space and the proper mix of food/water/nesting cover/roosting places.
If they have that, they will build till their numbers reach the carrying capacity level of a particular area, and then they will disperse to new areas.
Basically, here in Texas, all areas with suitable habitat have turkeys, and sort of like feral hogs, if there is a chunk of suitable habitat that does not have turkeys, just wait a while, it will have.

Yes, I talked to the rancher we do our hunts with and he said that they are seeing 150 turkeys or more every morning in the Alfalfa fields.

There is one place I pass by often and have noticed around 200 in the flock. Now there are none to be found in that place so I guess the've moved. My B-I-Law says there are no turkeys seen on his place now either so I guess they have also moved???

I sure wish they would take off in hopkins co. The tpw has stocked turkeys but have only seen 3 at my feeders then 2 then 1 and im sure you get the picture. I love to turkey hunt and we do have a spring season just no turkeys. Our place looks like perfect habitat, lots of oaks and mature hardwoods and pastures. I talked to the warden and he said they stocked rios and not easterns by cooper lake and he saw turkeys the first couple of years and now nothing.

Fireants won't even let the wild ones around here last too long. We lost another flock last summer. I've not seen one wild turkey on my place this fall.

Turkey are like hogs, if the land can support them they will populate. From San Angelo down to Del Rio, I must have seen 4 or 5 flocks of nearly 15-20. Big ones too.
Releasing any animal from captivity to the wild very rarely works. They are not adapt to survive on their own. Domesticated animals are dependent on humans, thus the word domesticated. And yes TP&W would be royally pissed off.
I thought it was illegal to have domestic turkey on your property???

I would like to see the law, that states you can't run domestic turkeys on "your land", no one that has ever raised them would not that, but, I can't believe its against any law..there some whites on the ranch next to ours (Rockdale) they lasted about a month.
hold on Newt, we got a runaway

I wasn't ever not calm.
Stick around this place a little while and pay attention, and you will find out that people ask such questions and are dead serious about it.
There are laws concerning capturing and confining native birds and animals, but there is nothing about having wild turkeys come on to a place because of domestic turkeys being there, unless the domestic birds are being used as live decoys, then someone will not stay calm.

Get a peacock, I knew a guy that had wild turkeys like pets because his peacocks called them up. It was hilarious the turkeys would beat up his chihuahua

You probably need to take the time to check with your local Game Warden before you do that.
There are plenty of wild turkeys in Texas and releasing some into the wild like that will not be looked at too kindly if they can be traced back to you.
I don't think you would like the fine. JMO.

One of the reasons getting the eastern wild turkey re-established in east Texas, is because of the difficulty in getting the birds to survive and stay in the area.

Every spring, my neighbor's Guineas attract 1 or 2 Toms looking for love. If you're listen just right, a Guinea does sound a lot like a hen turkey. Enough so to fool the birds around my house. My wife set up one of my Feather Flex decoys about 40' from the back deck one day and called a Jake in. He tried to breed that decoy for at least 30 minutes. He had it knocked off the stake and flat on the ground in no time. She videoed him for quite a while and then suggested that next year, we get an inflatable decoy for him so he would enjoy it more. We sat in our rocking chairs on the deck 40' away and he never paid us any attention.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.
