went back to the Oklahoma lease last night after unsuccessful opening weekend. got a late start with work, checking the lease, and getting a new ladder stand installed.

a few does and then this bachelor group I have seen on camera, my take a 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5. The 2.5 is 10" bigger than the 3.5, but I put the 3.5 on the hit list for my first buck on this new lease.

the group came in and the 3.5 was the obvious dominant and most weary one. while the others were munching he slowly worked in the woods 270 degrees, everything but the 90 degrees behind me. smile finally he came in but 10 minutes facing towards me. when he moved broadside 13 yards, no wind, and 3 sets of eyes & ears plus making a terrible draw they jumped out. Luckily 5 minutes later the 2.5 circled back behind me and then the hit list buck was coming. right before he cleared the 2.5 busted out of there.

in video I know it looks like he's walking fast, looks like that to me too, but in real life it was all slow motion, I almost remember him being still. solid hit, but a little shoulder, deep penetration into the lungs and arrow broke.

lessons learned to maybe move stand back a little, work on a quiet draw, and get that deer stopped.

my first white-tailed buck with bow. 121" gross with 10 main points plus 4 scorable stickers! average width 15.5" and tines, but deceptively good mass at 26.5" total.

almost perfect progression of my deer hunting experience. 2009 first buck rifle 100" 8-point, last year 110" 9-point rifle, and now this one another 10", point, and bow! No more 3.5 year old 120" deer for me, well unless I'm hungry. wink

Hey good job! You made a lethal shot and thats what matters.

From the home videos I have seen I think you did a fine job, you should see the ones my dad has made... and he isnt even trying to shoot a deer with a bow in them!

Cool video. You probably spooked them by drawing your bow and raising it at the same time. It's much easier if you can draw your bow slowly while already having it pointed at the deer. If you can't do that, you're pulling too many pounds.

Nice Bow Kill!

Congrats!!!

Pulling your bow back without spooking the deer is a fine art. I would say that is one of the hardest parts of bowhunting.

+1 Crank it down if needed. Most of todays bows are still fast and lethal at lower draw weights. Got cold and stiff in a KS stand one time and could not draw on a doe, tried three times. I kept thinking what the heck is wrong with my bow. lol

That could have went bad...

But, you made a good shot it seems and that's all that matters. Nice buck. Glad you caught it all on camera!

Way I see it is, you got him down and recovered him so no harm. But, I wouldn't make a habit of shooting while the deer is moving, especially with a bow.

You had already tipped that guy off on your position. So, he was watching your stand for movement. May want to let him calm down a little bit next time so that maybe he won't spot you and bust out next time too.

appreciate the tips, learning experience every time I step in the woods.

I don't believe in luck, but there is a shot percentage every time. because of poor skill (bad rest, not calm) I've missed high percentage shots with a rifle. Looking back as the video doesn't lie this wasn't the highest percentage shot. no excuses, but video makes it look farther away than it is, this was literally 8 yards.

this particular hunt taught me several things about stand placement, quiet draw, and in retrospect looking for a higher percentage shot.

I really think most of us could hit this shot 9 out of 10 times, but I know there is a black & white rule against releasing on moving target. it isn't bird hunting. thank you.

That's all that matters! Learning something everytime you go out hunting is what it's all about. If you refuse to learn, that's when it's time to quit hunting. Just to make myself clear, I'm not trying to bash the shot. Or, throw off on you in any way. You were successful and that's whats most important.

On your draw... I've found it easiest/quietest to "push" the bow away from me while drawing back. Just a suggestion though, works for some doesn't work for others.

Also, I like the heck out of that feeder! What's the brand of it? Also, can coons reach in and spin the wheel on it?

Congrats on the deer. He knew something was there so he may or may not have stopped if you grunted or whistled. He was in a perfect spot to stop though.

Good Luck on the next one up

I'm a big fan of them! Holds 600 pounds, you can easily load bags from ground, solar, and good timer system. So far hogs have been unable to turn over even when empty and coons can't spin it.

Congrats. If you aint learning something everytime out, you aint trying. You are right, the video doesnt lie. I watch video of shoots I have taken or others have taken with me and always see things in the video I wasnt aware of at the time the shot was taken. I applaud you for filming your bowhunt. I havent had the guts to do it because Im afraid it might ruin my opportunity.

Rob, despite what all the nay sayers are calling a bad shot, I think you made an excellent decision to shoot the buck when you did. any attempt to stop him would have probably resulted in the buck blowing out of there never to be seen again. Once again, GOOD SHOT buddy!!! Keep those videos coming.
