It is illegal to pick it up. But as soon as you drive off the guy behind you will the cut the head off. Its illegal but people do it all the time.

Quite a few years ago I hit a doe on the road near town. I went into town and found a game warden at the cafe and asked him about taking the deer. He said go ahead but I probably won't like what I see when I butcher it. He was right it was a blood shot mess and I ended up throwing it away.

If you are asking if you can carry an injured deer home. That is against the law as well without contacting the GW. As they said already any animal involved in a collision will have bruising of the meat.

we have picked up deer on the side of the rd before. my dad said it was fresh so he wound up tagging and throwing it in the truck. Good tastin deer, but we got stopped on the way back by a warden . he said it was ok since we tagged it and was glad that good meat wasn't being wasted. Horns were gone by the way. A few years later my dad spotted a fresh deer on the side of the road along with my grandpa and a couple of his kids. noone wants to stop but he insists so we u-turn and ull over. he gets excited at the prospect of the fresh deer meat and has us get ready to help put it in the vehicle. when we lift up the deer is when we notice the smell and maggots on the otherside. Everyone gave my dad a hard time about it. nothing like fresh deer meat.

Call the game warden when you hit it. He will likely tell you what to do from there. But there is no hurt in asking him.

You can pick deer up off the side of the road as long as you get permission for a game warden or other law enforcement. I have had the sherrifs department come out and allow me to take deer home. All you have to do is call law enforcment and have one of them give you permission.
I caint spel so good. Git off mi bak

I've seen deer hit by a vehicle in front of me on 3 occasions, and picked them up. Had a cousin that had one run into the side of his stock trailer not far from my house that got killed, and went and picked it up. If it gets hit in the head it's no problem at all. If it gets smashed full bumper across the body of the deer, the off side is good, as is most of the strap and the loins, and off side of the hindquarters.
Road kill at its best! LOL

Buddy of mine hit a nice buck just out side of town and called the game warden; he showed up and cut the horns off the bucks head and told them they could keep the meat.

I hit a black heifer in the head once, and we strung her up and butchered her. Packer wouldn't take her dead, the owner couldn't be identified, but she sure was some good beef. If I had to hit one in the head and pay the deductible on my auto policy, I'd rather hit a steer or heifer weighing about 500-600 pounds. LOL JJ

This is right out of the TP&W Outdoor Annual Hunting and Fishing Regulations under General Law p.20 ... •It is unlawful to possess a deer or any part of a deer that has been hit by a motor vehicle. End of story. It doesn't say it is OK if you ask this guy or that guy or your Uncle Harry, it is unlawful.

Call the warden and let him know the story...ask if its ok if you put your tag on it...he will probably come look at it and make a decision....not sayin this works everytime but it wnt hurt to ask...the way i see it someone needs to do somethin with it..better than a swarm of buzzzards all over the side of the road
