I work at the michael unit as a correctional officer and my captain was telling some of us that the state was thinking of canceling rifle season due to the drought. What are the chances of this. What are your thoughts?I think it would decimate the Texas economy but would sure make the herd bigger I think. What do yall think? elmer eek2

The last thing they want to is cancel a season in a State that is over run with deer and hunting rich in heritage. Drought this year is all the reason to shoot early and often.

They will never close a deer season because of drought. More like the opposite. They are actually wanting us to take deer early in the season.

"By taking measures early in the season, hunters can do their part to help deer until relief from the drought comes."

The main reason they had thought about it was that when hunters stop there trucks in pastures or where ever the tall grass would catch fire guess should put that in there to begin with.Sorry guys my bad.

It would make no difference. The same guys would just hunt other things, like hogs for example. Never happen. A land manager or owner might do it for their own property if they think they have a fire hazard, but never the state. In fact I think a forum member was denied access to a forest service lease for a time this year due to a fire hazard.

Does that unit allow hunting? Maybe he was talking about canceling that hunt. I believe the warden has that authority. If he's talking about canceling the season for the entire state.....he's crazy as Batman.

Bowman, I work close by. I don't know if Michael has the required 'Hunting Meetings' over yonder or if ya'll piggyback on the Coffield meetings.

Either way, it sounds like you haven't caught in to any of the meetings yet. Catch one, and it will answer all your questions about hunting the bottoms this year.

It really sounds like your Capt. is blowing smoke, maybe practicing to go up for Major wink

Could you imagine that Bill trying to pass the state floor? You'd definitely hear crickets chirping when senators asked to debate for the ban. They know they would be one term if they voted for that.

I'll have to throw the BS flag and agree with Sniper on this one. The carrying capacity of the land has diminished (less food)so the herd needs to be thinned out significantly to prevent a population crash. The deer population HAS to be at or below the carrying capacity of the land it lives on.

TPWD has already made press releases encouraging hunters to shoot does and culls early in the season to take the extra mouths off the table.

To cancel rifle season now would only be counter productive to that goal.

That would not be a bright idea in alot of other counties in Texas. Unlike Grayson there are other areas of the state were under those circumstances the population would explode and the end result. Mass deaths and smaller deer.

This is a danger drought or not. It might be less of a danger this year because what grass there is is shorter. Usually by hunting season the grass has gone dormant and is dry anyway. Alos I belileve that most of the newer trcuks have sheilds. Now if you parking your Vega that might be a problem.
