I got into the stand at around 4:30 yesterday evening. At about 6:15 seen a buck at about 50 yards and seen he was to small and didnt meet the A.R. requirements.Bout 15 minutes later another buck came from the same location as the first but he was acting little funny and moving slowly. As he continued to walk I noticed something on his right side the more I studied it I realized this buck had an arrow sticking out of his side.It was angling back and downward and was sticking out about 18 inches either someone shot it with a bow that was not powerful enough to penetrate or the arrow had already started working its way out.Made me mad was going to shoot him to put him out of his misery but never gave me a shot. First time ever to see this.

Sad deal. Hate to hear about any deer having to suffer. In an AR county, can you take a sick/injured deer out of it's misery if it doesn't meet the minimum width?

A word of caution before this goes much further...
It's a bad deal to see something like that, but I am continually amazed at the lack of grace we show our fellow hunters here on THF. No one wants to wound an animal, but it happens. If you hunt enough, it happens. And I am not talking about the slobs or poachers either. Bad things happen to good hunters.
Heck, I shot a very large doe last weekend with my muzzleloader here in Kansas, completely destroying her right shoulder and taking out one lung. Not a bad shot, actually. But two hours later after a lot of stalk and bump, we finally got to where I could put the finishing shot on her. This deer was dead on her feet and was still going.
Sometimes, things just don't go our way, even for good hunters. But I prefer to pick folks up and encourage them for the next time versus talking them down. Those who live in glass houses (and we all do), shouldn't throw stones.

It's why I wish bow and gun season only ran together. Someone with a rifle could more easily take such deer down.
Separate seasons is clearly for the advantage of hunters and perhaps even more, the people who make and sell equipment, rather than the deer.

Doesn't mean everyone would shoot it. If you only have one tag for a "trophy" or AR deer then the wounded one you see would have to fall into the category of an exceptable animal to squeeze the trigger on it. I wouldn't want to use my one tag on such a situation. Prolly would, but wouldn't want to.

I took a bow kill doe into a processor once that I had made a less than perfect shot on, but that had got the job done. He got to telling me not to worry, he had just finished processing one that he had cut 7 broadheads out of. Apparently someone had wounded the deer and trailed it long enough to get 6 more shots in before it was done. You never know what you might come across.

Kry, you said that very well. i was just about to type the same thing and i saw your post. I was watching Tred Barta the other day (don't personally care for him that much) and he was taking a bull elk with a traditional bow. He's a pretty good shot in my opinion, but he just had a fluke day, and gut shot the elk. It stomped off, he waited a couple hours, and called in EVERYONE within miles to help him try to find the bull. Literally 10-15 guys searching, for over 8 hours. Didn't find any sign of him. He gave a pretty good speech about ethics and such at the end.
Long story short, even pros make a bad shot. I've done it before, and i'm sure it will happen again. I try my hardest by constant practice and choosing my shots as wisely as possible not to let this happen, but it can and does.

its called hunting and bow hunting at that. the margine of error does get alittle greater. bad shots happen. both bow and rifle, anyone that says they have never missed or made a bad shot is lying or hasnt hunted long enough.you havent ruffled any feathers at all in my opinion.
It's not how you fall, It's how you get up.

I have a buck at our ranch that the neighbor shot with a bow and this thing had a hole in each shoulder that you could stick your pinkey in, looked nasty and I almost shot it to put it out of it's misery. BUT I didn't and now 5 years later that buck is still alive, very tough resiliant animals!

We had a deer similar to this a couple years ago in Mineral Wells. He had an arrow thru his flank. We called the game warden to make sure that we could put him out of his misery as he was not a shooter and did not meet the AR requirements. He told us to leave him be if he was not a legal deer. Makes no sense to me but we didnt want the ticket or go to jail either. The same year we also had a deer that drug his hind end around and couldnt walk. A neighbor showed up and said his son had shot a deer opening weekend of rifle season and he ran on our place. We looked for a little while but found no blood. They were hunting on about 2 or 3 acres and said it was an eight point and think it was this same deer.

It happens but is still sad in any case. I hit a doe high with my bow. Found arrow. No blood. Tracked her. Nothing. Saw her two days later with wounds but she seemed fine. Never got another shot at her. She lived at least two more years I know of.

I bowhunted a large ranch for 16 years that is bowhunting only, and this ranch had around 30 bowhunters and a manager that recorded and aged every deer taken.
Even with a very high recovery rate there were still animals that were hit and had to be trailed, and sometimes you just never found the animal despite good blood.
Also many times bucks were taken that upon cleaning them old broadheads would be found intact and completely healed over in shoulders, backbones and other body parts.
Just because a deer is hit with an arrow doesn't mean it's an automatic death sentence.
While hunting on this ranch I often heard the comment that would bring a broad grin to my face and that was when someone would say....I've never wounded an animal and I don't understand these guys that can't hit a deer in the vitals at 20 yards? I just won't shoot a deer unless I'm sure I can make the shot!"
During my 16 years bowhunting that ranch I wounded three deer that I didn't recover, and two of the three I was able to varify that they lived upon seeing them later in the season, with one that became predator food.
You hunt long enough with a bow and it's not if it's going to happen, but when!

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
