The cycling of the pump should be enough for most coward intruders. This one always comes in somewhere in these types of discussions....

I keep a Mossberg 590 tactical 12G with top fold stock on it, filled with 3" 00 buck one in chamber 7 in mag, backed up with a G17 with 1 in chamber and 17 in mag of 124gr gold dot. The cycling of the pump should be enough for most coward intruders Hmm I keep my shotty loaded with one in chamber as I do my glock so I can pump my shotgun without firing first wonder which will put more fear into them???

"really thought I'd see more shotgun choices. Any reason why some of y'all pick a handgun over a shotgun?"
The reason is, the folks think their ability is a bit more than reality.
Use a shotgun as primary HD!!

First line of defense is 2 100# Black labs, next is
Browning BPS 10gauge (24"barrel) w/ 5 rounds of 000buck and a surefire. Also the M&P .45 w/ Insight M6 flash/laser.
signature coming soon

Really thought I'd see more shotgun choices. Any reason why some of y'all pick a handgun over a shotgun? I've got 2 small kids in the house and you can't lock up a shotgun for quick access by the bed. I've got a small biometric safe by the bed that can hold a pistol, though. Keeps kids out and lets me in quick. But yes, no kids or no need to lock it up, a shotgun is the ticket.

I have actually had an intruder before. This is what I did....
After hearing the front door open and our lab barking and growling I stumbled out of bed very drowsy thanks to some allergy meds. Without thinking I walked into the living room to see what was going on. There was a single guy in the doorway trying to get our dog to be quite. When I said "hey" he looked up and put his flashlight on me. At this time he screamed "Oh My God" and took off running. Turns out I was naked and didn't put any shorts on.
So apparently the best home defense for me is my naked body haha.

Really thought I'd see more shotgun choices. Any reason why some of y'all pick a handgun over a shotgun? My scatter gun has a 28 inch barrel on it. There isn't going to be any quick maneuvering with that telephone pole.

A shot gun, then a nice .45acp 1911 as back up would be ideal to me.

18.5 12 gauge with 00buck This...except with turkey loads. I actually was out shooting recently and didn't want to waste my buck shot so I was useing 3" steel shot from the previous duck season. Makes a devistating hole in metal I can only imagine what it would do to soft tissue... I know I wouldn't want to get shot with it Big holes are from about 6-8ft little holes are about 3 ft. In theory the dogs should slow down any intruder enough to wake us up and for me to get to the gun safely. They don't even let grandma get water at night when she comes over without making a fuss.
If the dogs don't make them go away... Houston we have a problem. Because the intruder must be serious as heck and bold too.
Upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall

Yup, that's one of the big reasons I have dogs. Little yappers are as useful as my big "gonna eat your butt" dogs.

Yup, I have 3 beagles and one is a very light sleeper. He barks at people walking down the road outside the house, I'm pretty sure between him and the alarm system nobody is going to get into my house without me knowing about it. If they hear the barking and the alarm and keep on coming, then they'll have to be either the dumbest or most desperate thieves ever to have lived...

Three labs and a blue heeler that goes nuts when they see headlights or a vehicle from half a mile away is my alarm system.
