9 week and already fetching up ducks. Can't wait to hunt her next year. Also going to turn her into a field trial dog.

What I like to do at that age is let them bring it to me and not immediately take it away, I let them hold it a while and pet them with a “good dog”, and kinda sneak it away from them. They tend to not want to bring it to you if they know you are just going to take it away, that’s their prize. That’s just me, but I’m not an expert. But I did teach my cat to consistently retrieve like that, so if it works on a cat it will work on anything. grin

Looks just fine for the age. I think the force fetch is way over rated. Never did it with my pups. I just convinced them that they needed to bring everything back to me asap if they wanted to keep playing. Make a mistake and play time was over and I would go inside leaving pup outside all by itself. Labs are so social that isolation is the harshest of punishments.

Foosh, I do understand sometimes you have to use it. My thoughts are many just go it first to short cut the process. I have seen it almost ruin a dogs drive. Yes the dog would go get what ever, but the dog did not have the joy that it once did. I want my dogs to have the pure joy of doing what they were bred for centuries ago. That is my joy too!!

It depends on the dog, one of mine needed it, the other didnt.
Both great dogs, one obnoxious, the other pees on judds tires every chance he gets lol

Most dogs need it.

Good looking pup! Has the drive for sure!

Anybody that ruins a dog during FF is NOT doing it correctly. Anybody that ruins a dog using the shock collar is not doing it correctly.
If you know how to use and do both correctly then they are a great asset in training. The purpose of FF is not to shortcut anything. It is to reinforce their drive, especially on a 300 yard retrieve in water that is freezing cold.
