I thought this guy was pretty cool. I've seen him a few times but from a good distance. I walked up on him this morning and he gave me a good broadside view at about 25yds. I'm aging him at about 2.5.

Probably more like 1.5 yoa. I'm not quite sure. I'm not too good at aging since most of the bucks I see are young (no management plan here unfortunately). I think I saw him several times last year and his right side was missing but the left still looked good for his age. I plan on giving him two more years, hopefully no one else shoots him.

He does look to be 2.5 in the pic. If he was missing the right side that would explain the abnormal points behind the right side this year. My guess is he broke the whole antler off into the skull last season sometime. Should stay nontypical the rest of his life due to the pedicle injury.

Oh wow, it took me a minute but I finally saw the (growth) below his right mainbeam. I didn't think he was much to look at until I saw that. He could be real cool in a couple yrs.

I hope he makes it. He appears to stay on my area of the property since I feed year round so that should help.

be a good one in a few years
A hunt based on only trophies being taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be,time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there. -Fred Bear

Be interesting to see how he comes along over the next few years. What are you feeding? I have 300+ acres for him to stay on and up until last month he had everything he needed. Both my tanks are now dry so he has to go to the neighbors or another area of the ranch for water. We need lots of rain! I'm feeding corn and antlermax but it's not free choice. I tried alfalfa but they didn't take to it.

Hope he keeps his unique antler growth as he gets older. He'll be a great trophy one day.

we have a buck we call Big Boy. he started off his first year with almost straight up 8 points. his front left leg is screwed up. looks like he got hit or caught in a fence while a yearling. he is now for sure a 10 point and has a lot of mass. he will never be a 13 inch wide so we can't shoot him. this year he will be a 4.5 year old. the game warden said shot him and he will use leniency on the shooter. is this deer in any way hurt or have an old injury?

Lonestar, I haven't noticed any injuries in any of the pics and he seems to walk around and jump in and out of the pen just fine. I'm thinking that he just broke it off last year like ranchman said. I was sitting under a tree last year and he got so close I could hear his stomach making noises. I could almost have touched him.
younbow, I'm not going to shoot him. He is too young. Even if he doesn't grow it back, in two more years he will still be a good deer. We will never have good deer if we don't let them mature.

In my experience, points like that are usually a 1 year thing. Usually when the pedicle is permanently damaged the antler comes off at a weird angle and none of it is normal. Sometimes when a deer sheds his antler too much into the pedicle comes away with the antler... most of the time this fixes itself the next year.
