2.37" high at 100yards for a 260 yard long range zero.
Maximum Point Blank Range (6 inch Diameter vitals for WT) would be 307 yards MPBR.

Actually 250 would be the closest using MPBR for my rifles/ammo. Went with 200, but that isn't real accurate.

What RJD said...3 of my 4 shooters are all zeroed at about 175-200 yards with MV's from 2750 to 3100, and all have straight duplex croshairs, the 4th gun I fudge a little for the BPlex and Zero it at 165 yards (and + 1 3/4 @ 100 yards) so's the steps make up for the excessive bullet drop out to 400 yards at the bottom step and I am no more than +/- an inch for all 3 steps beyond Zero at 2 - 3 & 400. Its hard to get a 270 gr bullet at 2450fps max MV's to shoot very flat...but it do make an impression when it arrives. I rarely have an opportunity to shoot at fur beyond 250-300 anyway.

up

I think the MPBR for most typical hunting rounds is around 250yds to 310 Yds. To use MPBR most would be sited in around +1.7 to +3.0 inch at 100 yds depending on scope height, bc, velocity, etc.

Everything I shoot is 100 yard zero. Then I use a mil-dot reticle to determine range and make my adjustments using the turrets.

In my 30-06 with a 180gr load, I chose 150 above, but go with about a 175 yard zero, about 1 3/8" high at 100 yards. For a <3" MPBR out to a little over 200 yards leaving lots of room for user error on an average Texas deer or hog. Since I tend to always hunt like I am bowhunting, most shots I take are 25-50 yards, which also happens to be were the impact is more or less dead on with the cross hairs as well. If I hunted from a blind more often and hunted in more open country I might push it out a bit more, particularly if I had a nice steady rest.

The question is NOT "What is the distance from the bench to the target at the range where you sight your rifle in?". the question is what distance do you zero your rifle at.

In other words, if you want your rifle to be "dead on" at 200 yards, and the rifle range you use has only a 100 yard target, you will have to adjust your sights so that your rifle hits somewhat high at 100 yards, so it will be dead on at 299 yards. Clear?

Oh its clear, I dont trust taking a guess and shooting an inch high at 100 to zero in at 299 without shooting that distance, just doesnt work for me that way

Too bad only one choice is allowed. I zero different rifles/calibers at different distances depending on the primary use. Some are zeroed at 300, some at 200.

Guess I'll vote for 300 just to be contrarian. wink

Depends on caliber and what I use the gun for primarily.
Bur I would say on average it is 250

I sight in the recommended inches high for the particular ammo that I'm using for that rifle according to their ballistic chart @100. Then I verify at 200, 300, 400, etc at the ranch. Not saying this is right, just the way the Ol man taught me.

I zeroed mine dead on at 100 yards b/c I didn't plan on shooting at anything further but I am considering zeroing at atleast 200 next time I go to the range. Im shooting a Browning A-bolt .270.

One inch high at 100yds form 260 Remington. Works well out to 250.

100 yards, but I have dope out to 1000, so if I want to change something I just make an adjustment in the field.

I guess it goes back to what my old man taught me, which was 3" high at 100. I've just never got around to changing it.

Wise old man..... Jack O'Connor, Warren Page, and many other writers long advocated the 3"-high-at-100-yds setting for modern centerfire rifles. With such a setting, most guns will be zeroed at approx 300 yds and will have a MPB range of a little over 400 yds. And at shorter ranges, say 225 yds, there is little likelihood of shooting over a game animal.

Unless you're hunting brown bears at close range or whitetails in pine thickets, the 3" high at 100 yards, with a 300-yd zero, is probably the most useful setting for North American hunting.

Depends on were your hunting, east texas pines 100 all day. Central texas scrub or savana oak 175 to 200, west or south texas...depends on how far you comfortable at but id say 200 to 300

My Hunting Rifle Sight-In Philosophy

Ammo is expensive and every time I blink wrong its magnified by four at 100 yards.

I always sight-in a hunting rifle at TWENTY FIVE YARDS, KNOW my BALLISTICS, & PRACTICE

Sighting at 25 yards minimizes shooter error so its easy to diagnose problems or discern between equipment, environment, or shooter technique (bad habits?).

Bore sighting should get the first shot on the paper. At 25 yards, you probably won't need to bore sight.

Use the Maximum Point Blank Range (MPBR), which for hunting purposes, is the distance at which the bullet rises and falls about 3 inches above and below the line of sight.

Since I don't sight-in a rifle past 25 yards, I usually stick with 1/4" high at 25 yards in the same hole. Then I check my impact at 50yards or whatever distance I choose just to see if my ballistic calculations are correct. I also check it at different distances for accuracy. A little reverse calculating, since I don't have a chronograph, can tell me if my figures are correct Then I do some tweaking of the figures if needed. If you don't do anything else, 1/4" high at 25 yards will make you "hold on" deer capable out to at least 250 yards with most popular calibers with velocities above 2500fps.

Most advertised velocities are measured from a 24" barrel. The accepted rule of thumb for velocity loss per inch is as follows:

For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 1000-2000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 5 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2001-2500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2501-3000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3001-3500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3501-4000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

Sighting at 25 yards works.

Sighting in at 25 yards works...to get you on paper @ longer ranges. Your method is fine as long as u fire at whatever distance u anticipate shooting at an animal to confirm the proper trajectory.
